Forums - Gaming Discussion - If Sony made their own OS and if it could play PS4 games would you use it??.

Are we talking about a gaming-only PlayStationOS for PCs (which would require dual-boot, if you want to use that PC for other tasks) or a full-blown all-purpose OS?

Frankly I don't see Sony able to make a "full" OS with their manpower and experience and keeping it safe and up to date. As much as I like my PS4... even after 2.3 years it is still lacking many popular PS3-features. How long would it take Sony to develop a "full" OS which can compete with Windows, OSX or Linux, which have been developed for decades (new versions weren't developed from ground zero) to reach their actual feature levels and security?

Well think about it, would Sony really need to?

I mean they have been using and developing using Unix, Linux & source code for their own platforms for years.

The fact is Sony had helped develop the Android OS remember Android as a OS is from many companies adding to the source code, not just Google, its by many companies.

Sony could do exactly what Amazon did and fork The Android OS but make it playstation centric. Apk's & online store for the fork ,Hell they just may in fact do that.

But many times just because you fork Android really does not really mean much, because you really are not  closed off , the fact is an Apk is pretty much just another Apk.

Sony really does not need to make an OS because they have already invested into other OS's already to make one of their own if they wanted to.

That OS already exists and is called FreeBSD, which is the OS Sony modified into Orbis OS (the PS4 system software). They just don't publish any of their games on FreeBSD (let alone Orbis is closed source to boot)

Yup, Quite True, freeBSD I's open

FreeBSD is free

While you might expect an operating system with these features to sell for a high price, FreeBSD is available free of chargeand comes with full source code. If you would like to purchase or download a copy to try out, more information is available.

But what  Sony did with Orbis as you said was closed. For good reason though..lol

Sony have been very open source adaptive to OS's. In Adoption of them, not so much in opening up entire Eco systems.. LoL, but at least receptive in allowing some experiment to some things inside their software sometimes.

Yeah, like when they advertised the possability to run YellowDogLinux on the PS3, only to remove said feature later on?

yes why not if it still supports Physical PS4 games it would make the OS superior to Windows Gaming in every aspect. They could allow at least the base PS4 games to run on it, the developers could choose to launch the game with scalable graphics settings or patch them latter.

Dual OS is no issue for me because i already have to deal with it duetto Windows incompatibilities to run older games even 8 years older games. Thats why i also still have XP, its really no rocket science to launch a second OS just press F8 while booting and then select the Harddrive where the OS is installed

Dual OS

Don't know how to do that and can't be bothered to go through the hassle of finding out either.

So would still stick with Windows and Windows alone. If Sony wanted my money for their PC games they'd have to release them on Windows, it's as simple as that.

And that is a very good reason to stick with windows OS, not problem there, but as pointed out Sony is also supporting an OS now outside of windows OS based.

Sony Sold off SOE, their PC arm, but in the case of Mobile they are investing more into chips and network structure to include AndroidOS so really , Windows OS is understandable not a priority platform for Sony, as for making an OS its not making a OS per say, but it is tweaking the OS to support PlayStation.

Anyhow, with the state of Windows now (Windows 10 really gets more frustrating the more I use it), they'd do better with cross platform support (GNU/Linux, Mac OSX, FreeBSD, heck, even Amiga OS4)

PS4 has more games than Linux

Nobody said anything about your preferred platform which has less users than there are of Linux Users.

A Sony OS on PC would be Dead on Arrival. Sony needs to only focus on what they are best at hardware - not OS software which they would easily fail.

you havent read the OP he said that the OS would play all PS4 games. The PS4 libabry allready is bigger than Steam OS and has more interresting titles and exclusives than the entire Linux space imo. Most of the interesting titles on PC arent officially supported for Linux like Blizzards games.

Really? I am not so sure about that , Sony has one of the best version's of the AndroidOS running on their TV's and smartphone's.

So its not like they have very little experience in Operating systems like you are making it out to be.

And you havent thought it out. Why would a console only owner bother with upgrading a standard PC to play PS4 games when they could just buy a PS4 for cheaper?

so why are you upgrading your PC to play console games when you could just buy a console for cheaper?

Agreed, Playstation VR is LiquidVR compatible, so Vulkan graphics Api is prevalent in now.

Android OS

LinuxOS's which Steam OS is one.

Apple has Metal

Microsoft has access to DirectX & Vulkan for Windows 10

So Sony's able to leverage a graphics Api on all but one above , Apples Metal all from Vulkan Api.

Since Linux and Android pretty much can run on anything, Hell even Microsoft's Windows 10 has a Android App player . Sony I think was wise to concentrate on AndroidOS.
