That being said, I'm all for a more open industry where data is more widely available. But expecting people to leak that data when they're under NDA is wrong.

Meanwhile, in Japan...
Seriously, though, we need a U.S. version of MC. VGC could fill that role, but management is fine with ballpark estimates that they adjust after more accurate data from other sources come in, and even then there are some errors. Insular, secretive firms like NPD being the sole source of sales data are a detriment to gaming communities, especially ones like this one that specialize in game sales. This wasn't a problem when NPD was being open with the numbers, but now they're being hush-hush about everything, treating sales data as a secret that the common folk don't deserve to see anymore.
If we're now entering a dark age where we no longer get actual sales figures for the U.S., there's not a whole lot to discuss anymore. If that's going to be the new status quo, I think that once I've finished my big article on console sales (the ultimate goal of all the data curation and chart-making I've done during my tenure here), I may take a break from the community for a while to focus on other things.

What part of "expecting people to LEAK data" doesn't make sense here?
Media Create provide a public top 20 and subscribers get full access to data. That's not a leak, thats Media Create posting the numbers themselves in the public domain. NPD haven't provided numbers publicly (Outside of a few data points) for a few years now. Any numbers that have been posted during that time have come through leaks.
The issue of NPD not being open has been around for ages and I of course would love it if Liam Callahan was to disclose additional data points when providing media outlets with their report. But right now the reports can only be accessed by subscribers who have to sign a non-disclousre agreement. So continually asking them or expecting them to post data on VGChartz, NeoGAF or any other forum isn't the right way to approach it.
