It's more to do with tracking the orientation of your head than the position in the room, although of course it can do that too. |
Oh.. So is it basically essential?
A VR without the camera would be quite useless if it has not even head tracking?
Damn I have such a hard time to get my head wrapped around all of this. It was much easier with motion controlls for PS360WII. VR is complicated.

Of course it's essential. How do you think they'd track you without it? Haven't you seen the lights on the MOVE and the headset?

The PS5 Exists.

Yes, it's essential. The Wii remotes had the the sensor bar, PS Move has the cameras. PSVR works exactly the same way as PS Move. Basically they send light, the light is captured by the camera. Then it calculates the position from various information. The PS move controllers, basically just by taking a picture, we have an X coordinate, and a Y coordinate. We can also get a Z coordinate by how large the ball is. The closer it is to the camera, it looks bigger. The farther away, the smaller.
The Oculus Rift included the sensor. Sony might not include the camera because a lot of people already have the camera. Just think of it like another move controller. |
And the motion sensors make it even more accurate.
The PS5 Exists.

I have the camera and move controllers already, so if I was in the market for PSVR then I would be very glad of having a HMD only pack available. But it will be a long time before I can feel like the cost of the HMD alone is worth it.

People are talking about which will win between this and rift...
But, there is a possibility they can both lose.

not with this price

And the possibility that they can both win. They actually need each other right now to make VR a 'thing'.

I'd rather get a 3DS. Buy an Akecard for 10-50 bucks, and I'm way better off

| Lafiel said: would be a really good price, but for now I still expect ~$/€400 for a pack with PSVR and the camera I think a non-camera sku could cause some confusions, so they better have a fat red warning "PSVR requires the Playstation Camera to work" on the package a different solution could be to only offer cam-less packs online |
There are actually many PSVR games that offer a choice between move and standard controler. Some games apparantly only use the controler as well.
Still, this just reinforces the need for clarity when it comes to the PSVR and control methods.
