I don't doubt there are $5 PS3 games payig about, but how many of those are the decent or recent titles? Also how much for decent PS1 games? Most of the games you'd want to play from that era are commanding collector's rates now.

If you're wise with PC game purchases, anything preowned is worth pennies (just have to hope for a valid serial key) and new on Steam doesnt cost much more. Even better are the games bundles for a few dollars, the current humble bundle has Civ V and Beyond Earth (amongst others) for $15.

The same could be said for hardware, if you're happy with preowned it significantly lowers the price, particularly seeing as you don't need top of the line components to play most games at the moment.

Well I got many games for 3,5, 6€ in my germany (europe) store (I don't even buy that much digital games) the offer is even bigger (more games, and less expensive) if you buy in the american store with a usa account.

If the crash bandicoot games are decent 5€ for each of them

https://store.playstation.com/#!/de-de/suchen/q=crash

all Spyro games for 5€ each

https://store.playstation.com/#!/de-de/suchen/q=spyro

but good that we can agree that the ps3 is the best gaming device to get^^ that's something ;)

Where pray tell did you misread that?

I can agree with that.

Reason/con for PS3:

  • system is cheap used, slightly expensive for new
  • roughly ~2000 games released worldwide (not restricted by region lock)
  • PS1 back catalog (PS2 also if you have the early models of ps3) (lots of classics and gems)
  • Online is free (moot point, may not have much user playing a specific online game anymore)
  • Bluray player
  • I would say majority of the games are single player.
Reason/con for Xbox360:
  • region locked, so game library are around ~750 if US, and >500 if you are in Asia. (xbox is not popular there)
  • some xbox backward compatiblity
  • Online is not free
  • More user online for multiplayer games compare to PS3. (Majority of the people i know, rather COD it out on the xbox then ps3)
Reason/con for PC:
  • Cost more then console to run 1080i @30fps by ~200USD. Cost a newborn every other year if you chasing the newest thing. (4k, 100fps, ect)
  • good & old old games to play are few and rarely worth the reply. (Half:life, Age of Empire 3, Diablo, Starcraft, ect) not work the reply imo, because there are more new and  current sequal/prequals of those games.
  • Cheap new/current games from HumbleBundle and Steam Sales.
  •  Best Online hands down. Just look at amount of player still playing Counter-Strike 1.6. (If you play a 3+ year online game on console...good luck on find more then a handful of people online.)
  • Way more functions and integration of everyday life. School, work, cat pics, posting cat pics, ect.
  • Promotes health when you have a box of tissue and some lotions.

For my situation, I enjoy having a DS or PSP now. Portablity and with limited play time, its great to have a handhleld with an extensive catalog of games.

not much? if you buy your games wise for your ps3 you don't have to pay that much many games I got didn't cost more than 3 or 5€ and I don't need to look at steam to know they can't be that much cheaper there, if you go physical of course it is a bit higher, but here you can also buy your games used without spending that much money on them.

so for the third time now how expensive would it be your pc? to discuss the topic of this thread (best gaming "device" for your bang of buck)

Decent PS3 titles for under $5?

Those are in the $1-2 region, not many massively recent titles but I guess The Darkness 2 is there for 1.50

Heck if you are a big spender and are willing to go to the €5 mark here is all the software in stock on the pre owned place I get mine from mostly

https://ie.webuy.com/search/index.php?stext=*§ion=&catid=808&category_name=playstation3%20software?mode=buy&price=0-5&op=0-100

460 titles to choose from under €5

Scroll down through some of those titles and consider that you can get the console for 80 from that site and add about 10 games for it to walk away with a PS3 and enough games to last you til 2017 if you make good choices for under €100

Got a PS3 second hand for €80 @ 160 gb. Great buy including a smart blu ray player built in and access to ps1 classics which for me is a big deal. I'd get a Wii U for €150 next as I've seen them pop up for that price.

If you own a psp or Vita you know you can use the ps3 to stream all those psone games to either handheld for portable play (around the house) can be a great way to go back and enjoy the PS1 titles again. (remote play is an option for some ps3 games... but like... it's very very limited which software works)

Yeah I know but ovens vita. I play my ps1 classics from my discs on the TV and have downloaded a few others.

Guessing that is "not on"? but Yeah the PS3 is class for some of the downloadable games, picked up Suikoden 1+2 during a sale a while back on psn for €2.40 each, now I can sell off my original copy of the first game on ebay o/ not really a huge fan of collecting ps1 games so I figure I'm going to drop a few that I have digitally now.

I played Uncharted 2 (a 6 years old game), Uncharted 3 (a 4 years old game) and one piece pirate warriors (a 3.5 years old game) the last couple of months and will always find more than a handful of players to play with add to the fact that I didn't played thoses games with my friends and those were the only online games I played till now (prior to these games I never played online) so yeah can't agree with that.

Street fighter 4 came out in 2009 and you would be hard pressed to wait more than a minute to get in a game with someone as well, Sure there are tons of people playing Counter-Strike 1.6 lol, but if you compare it to other games on the PC there are a large number which bombed and don't have that huge triving online community, even new games like Evolve can easily have its community dry up faster than a piss in a desert.

Wow your are undercutting the amount of 360 games by a ton so far there have been over 1100 physical games released in North America.  There are almost as many XBL arcade games although a fair amount have been removed over time.  Plus there used to be a ton of indie games on it also but even more of them have been removed compared to XBL arcade games.

Games on the 360 and PS3 can get siginificant boosts in online players when they are on sale or part of PS+ and GWC.

Right now I have no problems finding people to play with in both Dirt 3 and Dirt Showdown on the 360 since both of those titles where recently free with GWC and both are over 3 years old.

Depending upon the price. Generally, I look at MSRPs but also factor for retail sales. Figure if anyone has waited close to ten years to buy a console, they can wait a bit more before buying to find the best price.

Of course a strong argument for any previous generation console starts with the used market, both for hardware as well as for the game catalog. You get the benefit of however many years a platform has been available in terms of overall numbers and the benefit of picking up many, if not most of these older titles for next to nothing.

As far as the PS3 itself, it's still a better media player than the PS4 thanks to having greater compatibility with various file formats (CD, various video codecs, music file formats, etc.) and a media remote that actually works as though it were packaged with the console.

Where older platforms don't make as much sense is in buying current games, particularly the cross generation titles unless the whole free online for PS3, PSN+ required for PS4 is a factor. Personally, I have a hard time buying the same game with reduced visuals and performance for the same retail price, or even $10 less.
