Forums - Nintendo - Are amiibos now a new form of Microtransactions? TP HD

Basically, though even if they did not have functionality to games, I'm sure people would buy them as figurines too

Well I just collect them, don't really use them that much lol. So to me don't really care what they do other than sit on my shelf lol.

That amiibos pervade almost every wii u game whereas skylanders doesn't. That's why people are more critical of amiibos not skylanders. Skylanders get wiggle room with using their figures to unlock things because this practice is limited to the skylanders franchise

That's a poor point. Nobody cares about Skylanders whereas people love to put everything Nintendo does under the microscope.

Locking entire levels behind toys isn't suddenly okay because it's limited to one IP. But go ahead and explain how that is cool.

I didn't say that what skylanders does is okay, I said they get less complaints because they are limiting it to one franchise.

people would still whine if there was an amiibo only game that locked content, but you wouldn't see that many complaints because it would only be to one franchise instead of every new wii u release.

if every ps4 game had people unlock content through NFC toys, I gaurantee people would lose their shit.

why are people putting Nintendo under a microscope? Because their $300 wii u purchase is entirely affected by Nintendo and their plans for amiibo.

At this point there's no denying what Nintendo intends amiibo's to be ...

Just another way for them to sell content that the majority of the community would consider as "overpriced" ...

People easily forget that they are mainly a figurine but they added some extra things to give them more value to gamers.
I don't have any amiibo from the Zelda franchise and I'm not buying any anytime soon and I don't feel as if I'm loosing anything special if I don't have them.
The problem with amiibo is that they are criticized if they have extra functions in games and they are criticized if they don't :S

Yes. And people will try to defend it.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

It is and it's one of, if not THE most clever marketing schemes in gaming history. Nintendo is obviously smarter than people realize lol.

It was a brilliant plan. When I first heard about amiibo, I knew they would get BIG. But at the same time, I don't like amiibos unlocking more than just cosmetic changes

I think most gamers with knowledge of the industry get that is the case.

At the same time, a lot of gamers are willing to shell out the money just to have a nice looking figurine to occasionally use to unlock stuff in a game or to just have on their shelves. It is kind of like those that get pre orders just to get free DLC from retail stores that does nothing, at least after the game has long since faded, you get to have a hopefully nice looking figurine to keep.

It is something of a sad state of affairs but it is what it is.
