Not at all. They could team up with fellow Jap. company Sony and then I only have to try one console next gen (I say try because I went with WiiU and PS4 this gen then ended up selling the WiiU)

Except for Nintendo UI that's all possible on PC with an Xone controller |
Literally none of that is possible with a PC and XBO controller other than free online.
And while this should have been obvious, I'll say it anyway. PCs aren't consoles. The factors of conveniences and simplicity are vastly and unarguably inferior on PC, which his why most people prefer consoles. With this in mind, I have amended the quoted post in BOLD to better reflect this sentiment.
That's not happening.
However, I would buy their games on Steam.

I use too. But frankly, now they just suck at making hardware and getting third party games.
Seriously, if they went third parties, we'll get the same games as we get now. What would really change, gamewise?
And maybe, we would finally get games like a new metroid, a new Eternal Darkness, F zero, Wave Race, more new IPs etc etc
But Nintendo won't go third party
This topic has been done to death for literally years. But the answer is still emphatically: yes.
I happen to enjoy the unique brand of consoles that Nintendo makes, and if it comes down to them going the way of Sega, I'm honestly not too sure I would remain very interested in "mainstream" gaming anymore. I'd still have indies on Steam, I guess. But really, that is not a future I want to see. And people rooting for it to happen, IE rooting for Nintendo to fail just so they can "play Mario/Smash/Kart/Whatever" on their PS/Xbox....to me, is incredibly lame.
I wouldn't mind, I'd love to play the majority of their library on my rig but I would also miss them and their systems for giving that novelty charm and nostalgic feeling they've given me over the decades.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
There would be less diversity in the console market which I don't think is a great thing but at the same time maybe Nintendo would port their new and classic games to Steam, which is tempting indeed.

Yeah, that's why Sega made Phantasy Star 5, or made Bayo 2 and Shenmue 3 happen. Once they go 3rd party its over. Do you really think they care what a vocal minority of gamers want when they are 3rd party? Those vocal minority sales matter to Nintendo now because they also buy consoles, peripherals and other Nintendo games. Once Sega went 3rd party they were done. The exact same thing will happen to Nintendo. Becoming bigger like you say means they need bigger sales to support themselves. They won't get those sales from niche nintendo games. |
Sega was done long before they went 3rd party, they were done probably since Saturn

if people really cared about diversity in consoles, Wii u would be doing much better.

That is doubtful. If Nintendo is a 3rd party publisher most likely, we'll end up not getting any of their fringe games anymore, because they just aren't gonna sell. You can say that Nintendo has no choice but to cave in, but most likely, like all 3rd party publishers, they'll instead focus on the franchises that do sell. Nintendo still has shareholders to appease after all. Or we'll see a couple of these games that may or may not be good, along with a warning from Nintendo saying that it needs to sell xxx millions if they want a sequel. Or even worse, a mega casual surge of their games on mobile and a complete abandonment of their fanbase. Not only that their fanbase will most likely abandon them too. I don't know if you know this, but there is a certain pride in the Nintendo fanbase. Most of their fans will treat it as though Nintendo abandoned them. The reward for decades of loyalty is Nintendo telling them that the systems they bought are worthless and to go buy a PlayStation? They won't go after those games on other systems. Its why Wii U has some of the strongest attach rates. I'm hovering around 50 Wii U games. You wanna know how many games from Nintendo I'd buy if I had to get it on PlayStation? Maybe one. Maybe. Did the 12 million Dreamcast owners buy millions of units of all Sega games on other systems after Sega shut down? No. They all went onto something else and Sega floundered. I should know. I was a diehard Sega fan from Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast days. |
I'm getting a conflicted message from you on this. Are you a fan of nintendo because of it's games or it's consoles? Consoles are only a means to play the games. Why do think you would have less nintendo games to play if nintendo went 3rd party when most likely, not making hardware would free up all of the resources that go into it? Sega and Nintendo are not the same and I doubt that nintendo would follow their example in how they act as a publisher.
