Forums - Gaming - This Gaming Generation is Horrible, the Industry is a Mess

Let's Make the Industry Great Again

Ill start by poycotting DLC 49 30.43%

Ill Buy Games with Campaigns 81 50.31%

Ill quit gaming 31 19.25%

I have really enjoyed myself this generation. Sure, I experienced a few bad games at launch like bf4. After the patches, it became a really good shooter.

I also usually don't buy a game until it goes on sale or when they release an "ultimate" or "goty" edition.

Sure, this generation isn't perfect, but I have enjoyed my time with the ps4 and PC.

I'm enjoying the games this gen. Although I'm really sick of broken games, over-prized DLCs, awful ports, Konami... and the gaming community could be awful at times. But, is the industry to blame? We gamers must think about that. Why do they keep releasing broken games? Over-prized DLCs? Awful ports? Because we're buying them. Companies look for profits. Do you honestly think that, if we wouldn't spend our money on those things, they would keep releasing them? Sometimes I think gaming community lacks auto-criticism and blames everything to the companies. We are also to blame. Stop supporting these things when they happen, and you'll see how quickly this would change. Although I think that's an fucking utopia right now.

The only thing I really agree with ya on is broken games. Western devs need to take some time iron out the kinks in their games. Most of what you're mentioning is optional.

Remasters are optional and they sell. It doesn't hurt anyone.

DLC and season passes are optional. You don't have to buy it. Personally, I get DLC for the games I like. It's my way of rewarding devs for good work. I don't touch season passes.

Episodic games are also optional. If you don't like 'em, don't buy 'em. If sales are low enough. devs will stop doing that. I personally don't care for 'em.

Online only games are optional. I play some of these. They are fun for me because I like pvp.

Completly agree here.

Broken games is a pain, and if there was more way to get money back from this, this would help customer, since devs would get a lot less money with game getting back on shelve.

Remaster is really optional, and i really find this cool for new young gamer who can enjoy old game. i know i won't play a ps1 game anymore due to 3D aged pretty badly but would play remaster of a lot of them, i hate aliasing so any remaster of good game without this is cool for me :p

I have buy DLC for maybe 5 games from  the start of DLC for gamming, and some of these DLC is more like real expension like old time. I dont get why ppl unhappy with them, just not buy them and move to a other good game.

Season pass, never buyed a single one atm so not care about them.

Episodic, well just wait the game is finish... what wrong with this ? usually when episodic game finished first and second episode is half priced, so at end you pay your full game lower than full price... if you not have any patience to wait blame yourself.

I really enjoy this gen with bloodborn (no dlc buyed) Until dawn, Uncharted collection (not played the 3 on ps3) Last of Us (not played on ps3) Infamous second son (No DLC), Dragon quest heroes, transistor  and many other game i still not played (no time atm)

The problem is not from industry, but from gamer who buy DLC/broken games/etc right away and not punish industry, assassin creed 2 brocken, ppl buy 3 anyway so why industry would stop ? same about mobile, mobile gamming grow because ppl is stupid to pay a lot for the "free" game, you cant blame industry for this, but only gamer....

First off, I've been playing since the first generation of consoles; I've lived through and played them all.

The 8th gen feels like an incremental, but not insignificant evolution from the 7th gen.

The 7th gen was a considerable leap up from the 6th gen, which was reflected in the R&D, initial hardware BoM, MSRPs and duration of time between generational upgrades, partly due to the 2008 recession, but also to recuperate early losses from excessively ambitious hardware. The sole exception was the Nintendo Wii (profitable from day one with a low BoM and modest MSRP), which was the first to see an upgrade in 2012 despite developing an overwhelming initial lead in the early part of the 7th gen.

To me, the 8th gen feels like a conservative, 5 year cycle plan. Developed during an uncertain, post recession economy, cost cutting was a primary concern to offer the lowest MSRP and BoM possible. 5 year cycle because the modest jump up in hardware is likely to age faster.

Who knows, maybe MS and SCE will attempt to stretch their 8th gen consoles to 6, even 7 years before their successors hit retail. The Nintendo NX will likely hit 5 years after the Wii U debut in 2017.

In addition to hardware cost cutting, software developers have been resorting to every tactic to stretch games via DLC as well as offer annual releases on major franchises with pretty modest upgrades as would be expected with shorter development pipelines.

This is not something that will be uniquely characteristic of the 8th console gen; it's how the console and to a lesser extent the PC gaming industry will be heading into the future.

The other option is a step backwards in terms of scale, scope and budget of projects; small development studio indy games, mobile games, etc.

If it feels as though major developers who are releasing big budget titles are playing it a bit too safe, it's simply a matter of liability in most instances.

I am disgusted by the business practices this generation! We as gamers should stand up to these companies and stop buying their garbage. I am not going to be politically correct like the forums want me to be because we as gamers deserve justice. I am fighting for all of you!

God damn season passes and DLC:

At release Destiny costs well over 120 dollars to have the complete experice. Activision is so god damned greedy they want us to pay for extra dance moves for our characters. Are friends up north in Canada, due to the currency conversion, had to pay almost 170 dollars at release for the whole game. This is not he bungie we know from Halo 3.

StarWars Battlefront costs 90 dollars to have the complete (well not really) experience

Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, Fallout, and just about every other game that came out this generation so far has been trying to take advantage of us. It is disgusting.

Even Nintendo is starting to use DLC in their games!

Broken Games:

Fix your goddamn games. Assassins Creed Unity was a disaster. The Witcher 3 (an excelent game and since fixed) was broken at launch. There are many others. Games are too buggy and should not need day one patches. This is garbage! Halo: TMCC online was completely broken at launch.

Remasters:

While I am not totally against them, this generation managed to screw up all the remasters that came out so far.

The Last of Us - Great game though it did not need a remaster and did not add anything new to the table.

Halo TMCC: Totally screwed up the online. Apparently it's okay now.

Wind Waker HD/TPHD remastering games that did not need it. Should have remastered the older Zeldas in HD. Does not generate any interest in the Wii U.

Lack of Content in Our Games:

Who decided it would be a good idea not to have campaign modes anymore? StarWars Battlefront was ruined completely. Titanfall was a hit and a miss. Call of Duty no longer has campaign on older systems as a way of maximising profits. I am sure there are more.

Graphic Downgrades

Not sure if Devs are outright lying or maybe our consoles we recieved this gen are just really weak. Games almost never look like their E3 showings. E3 is just a big lie! We are bringing it back together folks one game at a time.

Episodic Games:

Companies are now deciding to sell us 1/5 of a game and sell us the other 4/5 for more money.

How did this start? This stated when companies started to go out of business during the recession. A decrease in competition cause these giant companies to become too powerful. Its gonna end here! EA, Ubisoft and Activision by themselves will destroy gaming as we know it. Not to mention all the others who will follow them when they see their quartely profits. Let me tell you, Indie games are a breath of fresh air. I encourage you all to go out and buy one the suits you.

What can we do? Stop buying these games. If you do buy the games, do not get the DLC! We can cause a major movement online to stop all this stupid cooporate greed. We kicked Microsoft's ass when it came to the Xbox One (now the console is an excelent device). If we can change a entire console we can change the industry!

Summary:

No more EA

No more Ubisoft

No more activision

No more DLC

No season pass crap

No episodic games

Don't buy games you know are broken until they've been fixed

God damn season passes and DLC: Wait for the complete version.

Broken Games: Wait for the complete version.

Remasters: Don't buy them if you don't want to. I was thrilled to get The Last Of Us for the PS4, because I had changed platforms and hadn't gotten around to playing TLOU before.

Lack of Content in Our Games: For me, this is not an issue because I don't play online and I don't play shooters. I enjoy story driven games and shooters will never be very good at that because of their action oriented nature. So the games I buy always come with a "campaign".

Graphic Downgrades: Graphics have been good enough for my eye since the previous gen. Not an issue anymore.

Episodic Games: Someone already pointed out that the episodes aren't full price. Don't care for these myself, I'd rather wait for the whole package.

So, in summary, wait. Given enough time, any game will be reasonably priced, plus you'll get the benefit of all the extras and having the bugs crushed. There's so much to play right now to keep you busy. Right now, I'm playing the latest Dragon Age (published in 2014, I know but it's the same experience now that it was then, plus benefits).  By the time I'm done with it, I think The Witcher 3 will be in a very playable condition. Once I'm done with that, perhaps Fallout 4 will be ripe. Or something else. You see how it works? Sweet!

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a disgrace that releasing games broken is more or less the industry standard right now. But the only thing I can do about it is to not be the early adopter, but wait instead. And that's what I'm doing.

The problem with gamers is that when a new game emerges, it has a certain period of "coolness" or "hotness" or whatever. Everybody rushes out to play it at first and somewhere down the line it will fall out of favor, because it's no longer the new thing. As if the experience is somehow less than what it was at launch, even if it's new to you. By the time all the content is out and the bugs ironed out, people have mostly moved on. Oh well.

Around the Network

As a consumer, I'm having fun with the 8th gen.

Tech/performance-wise, just about every game I've played on the PS4 is nice and sharp thanks to a native 1920x1080 render and frame rates run between 30-60fps, which is what I had with 7th gen (time frame wise) comparable gaming PCs, without any of the hassle of having to build, upgrade and do system maintenance myself.

Essentially, the 8th gen has bumped me off PC gaming almost completely with no significant drawbacks.

Would I have liked to have seen more new 8th gen franchises? Not even a question. More is always better because it means more gaming options even though I found myself abandoning most of the 7th gen created franchises between the 2nd and 3rd games.

But for what it is and what console gaming has become, I'm not complaining. I buy what I like, I watch/read reviews of what I don't know that's coming out and I skip anything I don't feel like supporting or playing. It's very simple.

Yup. There's still some games to look forward to, but having to be constantly afraid of a probably very average experience being chopped off into pieces with or without us knowing about it is a pretty crappy feeling.

I'm now filled with determination.

you can call out CoD's season pass all you want, but reality is CoD:BO3 has SHIT LOADS of content. it has an 8~ hour long campaign. it has a deep and big Co-op Zombie mode, and a huge multuplayer with tons of modes and 12 maps. all these are playable in split screen, online and offline, BTW.

if anything COD:BO3 is one of the most content packed games this gen.

The Witcher 3 was in no way or form a broken game.

if you dont like episodic games, just wait until the "season" releases and get it then. the walking dead is going around what? 15 bucks for a full season, i dont see a problem with that at all. considering its around 9 hours long.

DLC and Season passes when done right, can be fucking amazing. look at Driveclub and The Witcher. they offer so much content and easily worth their price.

I did not play The Last of Us, AC: Black Flag on the PS3 but I did on PS4. There are many other PS3 games that now are on PS4 that I did not play and am happy that I will be able to at one point in the future.
These are essentially ports with updated assets to suite the more powerful hardware.
Not having these would be silly and would make me very unhappy.

I'm enjoying this gen.

I bought my first season pass ever in November, for Fallout 4, but mainly because it only cost me $10. I generally never buy dlc or season passes, though. I usually just wait until everything has been released, and get the goty edition, or whatever they decide to call it.

As for remasters, i have no problems with them, if they are well done, and they're not anymore than roughly $10 per game.

As for broken games, i buy very few games at launch anymore, due to there being so many broken games released, and also, because very few games are really worth the $60 price tag. If you wait 1-2 months, you can get most games for about half price physically, one way or another. Also, it took me a while, but i finally realized there's no point in me buying most games upon release, as i always have a backlog. I typically only buy 3 or 4 games a year, when they're released, the rest are black friday purchases.

My main gripe with this gen, is the multitude of multiplayer only games. I will only buy games for campaign mode, as i can't stand most multiplayer aspects of games. It's the same damn thing, over and over and over.
