Ok, here we go... the battle of the wiki's

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_generation_of_video_game_consoles

Do you see any handheld listed in the first generation consoles? If there's no handheld listed in the first generation, then it is, by default, NOT possible for the 3DS to be apart of the 8th generation.

So...Smash 3DS is considered a 5th gen game?

Then I guess vita counts as 5th gen as well. But I guess most don't care about that since the Vita is not selling well.

i really don't know what handheld generation we are in simply because no one has ever tried to define one. If you ask some, like me, they'd say it started in 1989. But there were things like electronic football etc. well before then. It's sort of a grey area.

One thing I DO know is, history seperates handhelds from home consoles. Wikipedia makes the distinction. The companies who MAKE them make the distinction. Even Vgchartz does the same thing. You never saw Sega doing commercials where the Game Gear was going up against the SNES. It was always the Game Boy. That's because they knew, understandably, that handhelds sell to two distinctive consumers over all. Sure, there is some cross over but not to the point where people are going to choose between a PS4 and a 3DS.

I've been discussing gaming online since 1999. Back then, no one ever lumped the two together. Before that, companies didn't do it. No one ever did it. As a matter of fact, it's ONLY within internet forums these days where you see kids doing it and it's almost always, without fail, Nintendo die hards looking to skew numbers in their favor which is absured. Nintendo has never lost a handheld war and likely never will. There's no need to skew things on the home console side when you can just brag about that. Even with home consoles, they've won just as many generations as Sony has won (3) so... I don't get it.

But the end result is the same; less people are buying Nintendo games/systems, less people are playing Nintendo games/systems.

Nintendo games still sell great to their established audience, but that audience is smaller now than in previous generations.

That argument doesn't really hold weight, u said they are less mainstream than they were during the GBA+GC era, if that's true than how have most of their series not shown a decline from that generation?

I'm going to post the list of GBA+GC million selling Nintendo IP soon and the data shows that Nintendo games still sell equelly as well and in many cases more than they did back then. How can Nintendo games sell equal or better if they are less mainstream/played by less people?

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

20 million less people own a Wii U or 3DS compared to a GCN or GBA.

Also, key franchises like 3D Mario and Smash Bros have declined compared to the 6th gen.

I suggest that we call this behavior curlogic.

If we take the average between SM3DL and SM3DW (because it's two games vs. one in the sixth gen), 3D Mario sales have increased.
Super Smash Bros. 4's 11.5m is a bigger number than Melee's 7m.

Like I said, curlogic.

Combining Wii U and 3DS against GCN alone is hardly a fair comparison.

It is fair because the comparisons that have been drawn in this thread are gen vs. gen.

In that case, we're still back to this gen having 20 million fewer Nintendo system owners versus the 6th gen.

And here's the thing; Nintendo wasn't really mainstream then either. The Wii saw them return to mainstream prominence, but in the 6th gen they'd lost a lot of their relevance to the average consumer, so comparing this gen to the 6th gen is a sad statement in itself.

Great list. The amount of games is impressive!

I'm also happy to see Pikmin 3 reaching 1m; this means it sold similar to previous titles and is not a bomb as some anticipated. :P

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

They sold over 100m hardware units in the sixth gen. Does this mean Sony's PS1 wasn't really mainstream in the fifth gen either?

What was your original point again? This thread was about showing that Nintendo software is still in high demand despite Nintendo making so many bad decisions. You disagreed with what exactly?

PS1 controlled the vast majority of the home console market. GBA may have had a monopoly on the handheld sector, but GCN had scarcely over 10% of the 6th gen console market.

I never contended that Nintendo software still sells well. It's hardware, however, does not.

Nope. 3d world is tracking ahead of sunshine and smash for wii u was canibalized by the 3ds version. All other games are around the same level or higher than their GC counterparts.

Pokemon is no surprise. ALL HAIL SPLATOON!
