It is fair because the comparisons that have been drawn in this thread are gen vs. gen.

In that case, we're still back to this gen having 20 million fewer Nintendo system owners versus the 6th gen.

And here's the thing; Nintendo wasn't really mainstream then either. The Wii saw them return to mainstream prominence, but in the 6th gen they'd lost a lot of their relevance to the average consumer, so comparing this gen to the 6th gen is a sad statement in itself.
