I never said motion controls were not a major factor; of course they were, but that doesn't disqualify its victory. I've seen plenty of people right here on VGChartz use all kinds of inane logic to try to claim that the Wii lost last gen; from implying that casual purchases don't count to saying that attach rates or time on the market decide a generation's winner rather than actual consoles sold.

As for the collapse from Wii to Wii U, that's easily explained; Nintendo turned into fucking morons from 2011 onwards and actively refused to adapt to the changing marketplace.

And while this may sound harsh, only diehard Nintendo loyalists claim they're not competing with PS/Xbox. They clearly are, and they're getting their arses kicked because they themselves refuse to acknowledge this.

Who was saying that the victory doesnt count? i think what people were saying is not to let the hype of WIi numbers get to them because prior to that the sales in there home consoles were declining and once that was over it would go back to normal. I guess everyone was wrong cause it is worse than normal. I dont know what crazy fools were saying they lost, thats madness. But goalposts.

I would argue they didnt really adapt too much with Wii, unfortunate that the Wii U isnt popular enough to not make that an issue.

its aint harsh, its true. very true.

I can't recall which specific users made these claims, but there it wasn't just one or two, it's a debate I've had dozens of times over the last 5 years.

Wii's success was due to a shrewd reading of the market; they saw an untapped audience and successfully captured it. Then other companies moved in, the Blue Ocean became another Red Ocean, and as usual when this happens, Nintendo was too slow to respond.

Had they applied the same degree of insight to the Wii U, they would have seen that the market in 2012 was drastically different to 2006, and that what they were attempting would not work.

"Slow to Adapt" is pretty much Nintendo's company slogan by this point. It basically sums them up for the last 20+ years.

Nintendo is having a crap generation yet their 3DS + Wii U puts them in a competitive spots hardware sales total wise next to Sony overall

the fact that Nintendo is still not far from the top, again handheld + home console combined, says a lot about their relevance and that they haven't really dropped off the map much

and then when you look at software sales no company comes even close (Sony's in-house IP software development and sales are laughable in comparison, third parties are what push their consoles)

Nintendo will be fine

the Wii U was just marketed terribly and conceptually poorly done. what would be concerning would be if Nintendo had put out a GREAT system and marketed awesomely and it still did poorly. but that's not the case. pretty much everyone (Nintendo fans included) agree that the Wii U has shortcomings in terms of its name and its Gamepad (and the lack of good use of said gamepad)

Nintendo just needs to go back to their roots and make a more hardcore system without gimmicks and sales will pick up to an extrem amount

I sound like a broken record but the fact that the Amiibo's so universally sell well to consumers says a lot about Nintendo's relevance and the draw that their characters have. as soon as their toy line was released it became one of the top lines up there with Infinity and Skylanders out of NOWHERE. they have the most valuable gaming IP on the planet (maybe bar Grand Theft Auto)

These kinds of threads really are sensational in design, because there's no in between position painted for Nintendo to be in according to this poll. The WiiU is currently Nintendo's worst selling homes console and the company has still been profitable under extreme circumstances. So I think there's another chain of events that could happen with the NX that many aren't considering here. They don't have to dominate hardware sales to be viable in the video game business and most here just completely choose to forget that Nintendo has other ventures to earn money from in the works.

How did that work for them with Gamecube and N64?

If NX is some kind of fusion system, you can bet people will say that it only failed because it was a gimmick. Yet no one was calling the wiiu pad a gimmick when it was revelead. It became a gimmick when it stopped selling well.

As people have stated several times; they do not need to 'win' the race in order to survive. Nintendo has a safe place in the market for now, their strong software sales make up for the poor performance of the Wii U and the Wii U is not doing much worse than the Gamecube or the original xbox, in fact it will probably end up with about the same lifetime hardware sales but higher software.

This is not a doom thread.  And OP was busy.

All they need is reall third party support and a system with modern graphic capabilities.  From what I have heard, this wont be a problem.

Dunno what people think of as a comeback. I don't think Nintendo needs to dominate to maintain a healthy positin in home consoles. If they can sell 30-40 million home consoles in the NX generation that will be a godd result for them and a sustainable player base, especially for sales of Nintendo games. There's nothing dominant about that, but with Wii U staring down the barrel of <20 million in sales then a home console version of NX hitting 30 million would be rightly called success.

A portable edition of NX would probably be fine in the 30-50 million range too. If hardware is sold at a profit, or even small loss, from the outset then I imagine Nintendo will be profitable for several years.

Then, selling 30-40M it's a comeback after the disastrous 15M of the Wii U.

This is not a doom thread.  And OP was busy.

He had no valid arguments to defend the current financial mess that was Wii U, so he went for the easy way: call this another doom thread and keep living in denial.
