I mean that's cool and all, but I doubt this "sponsor" actually does anything other than Splatoon ads, a retweet, and not getting shut down. This was the case in TBH5, Apex, and Evo, and I doubt this will change for this event.

Call me ungrateful, but I'd much rather want Nintendo out of this and have PM back; it is the main reason why PM cannot grow due to Nintendo's interference and ludicrous policies.

Maybe, but better than the alternative (Nintendo shutting it down). All steps in the right direction.

Maybe, but I'm tired of seeing all this praise when Nintendo could do so much better. It's like they're trying to take advantage of Smash instead of actually helping Smash. Are they trying to contribute pot bonuses? Advertise the tournament better? Trying to emulate it like Capcom 2015 SF tournament? Help fund the tournament without a need of a Genesis 3 compendium? Hell, even help it to even a close degree to their Million-Dollar Splatoon Nintendo-sponsored tournament? Answer: No to all of them. This is still really pathetic "support," and Nintendo does not deserve praise in this case.

But all could be easily done in the future if we show support to them. It's a two way street. If all we do is criticize when they do take small steps forward, then what is the point in going forward at all? Then it's back to trying to remove games from the tournaments.

In a way, these are small steps for Nintendo. Which is fine because I don't expect immediate big steps at first hand. I mean, I don't recall Capcom doing as much back in Street Fighter II compared to now (unless someone can correct me). Nintendo can do better, but sometimes baby steps can go a long way.

While it's unfortunate that PM's status as a game as a scene came to a halt, it's kinda expected because it was already going at a slippery slope, being a well-known mod to the best-selling game of the franchise. I'm personally neutral when it comes to mods in gaming since I understand both sides. It's a harmless mod that made its own take on an already great game (regardless of opinions from competitive players), but I also understand Nintendo does not want to get involve in alterations of their IPs, which are their babies. They treat their IPs differently compared to Western studios like Bethesda, Ubi, etc.

Hopefully, they'll fully embrace Smash as a competitive game like they're doing with Splatoon. I mean, from my POV (along with others), Smash 4 is probably the most balanced out of all the official games (especially for a 58 man roster). Sakurai and his team should be commended for tweaking most of the characters when they needed them. Now, it's not all about Diddy Kong's "Hoo-Haa!" or countless Sheik dittos.

Again back to my original point (with the first post), if Nintendo did not interfere with Smash's tournament scene, PM would still very much be alive (which bear in mind, the PMDev team does not make a single cent for their hard work directly from selling the mod. In fact, this helps Nintendo drive more sales for Brawl due to anti-piracy policy for PM, and it's the main reason why I bought Brawl). But now the community is in ruins, dying as we speak, making those hundred-thousands of hours of development and practicing to near-waste.

This is pathetic in the fact that Nintendo had over a DECADE to take action with the competitive scene, and they're doing a garbage job doing anything. They've seen Melee on its near death-bed when they made a sequel designed to be purposely anti-competitive. They shown and still show ignorance about the community tournament scene as they've proven with Tournament Mode online and among others. At least Capcom didn't actively tried to destroy their scene, and certainly didn't take over a decade to actually support it. Seeing how much support Splatoon is getting competitively is pretty much like a backstab on the Smash community's back, where a. no patch notes, b. no pot bonuses support, and c. intending to design Smash4 to be overly defensive instead of taking it to Melee (mostly) spectator-friendly routes. In fact, I don't care if they were to not come in at all. They can try to shut down Genesis 3 for all they dare, it'll end up just like EVO 2013 where there was a public outlash that would force Nintendo to back down with an even stronger Smash scene than ever before.

I guess where I'm going with this post is this: screw off Nintendo. If you're going to "sponsor" us, actually SUPPORT US. They clearly know how to, but they just love toying with the Smash community that's been through so much burden. I don't want people looking at "wow great company Nintendo embracing their competitive scene!" when really, they do a garbage job doing so. I see them doing it more for public attention and recognition moreso than actually helping the scene.

^ I'm not gonna pretend I know everything about the competitive Smash scene because I've only started getting invested in it late 2014 when Smash 4 came out. I mean, I barely know much about the techniques and I can't even do a quarter of the moves pros make in Smash 4 or Melee. I think this holds true for a majority of people who bought Smash all this time. If you think more people brought Brawl just for PM and drove Brawl's already impressive sales (12 million LT sales to how many downloads for Project M?), that's fine. I just don't agree with it.

We're also talking about a franchise that originally was not meant to be competitive-driven. Im sure you know the original game's development history so I won't waste time talking about it. The franchise sorta evolved that way through the grass roots as a small sample of Melee owners thought more could be invested upon the game. Nintendo ultimately tries to cater towards the majority, whether any of us agree with it or not. SourceGaming has mentioned it a lot from their experiences in translating stuff from Nintendo and Sakurai (who I think has been misunderstood/mistranslated a lot) and understanding them as a business.

Sure, Nintendo could do better, as I've said. I just don't think as extreme as you do I guess. I mean, NoA appears to be interested in the competitive Smash scene and Bill Trinen, himself, has participated before and has mentioned notable players on Twitter. Patch notes would be cool, but I like how players experiment and notice any of the changes in each character, especially since players like myself would not be able to spot them. Plus, Smash 4 isn't really overly defensive. It's defensive-oriented, sure, but I've seen plenty of impressive offensive maneuvers, especially as the game evolved.

Again, this is my opinion from what I've seen and what I've read on Reddit and Smashboards. I'm no expert here in the competitive scene, but I'm passionate about Smash as much as any fan, casual or competitive. I thinks it's nice that Nintendo is starting to warm up to the competitive scene of any game they've made.

Everyone knew the deal with PM. The modders aren't angry, so excuse me if I'm not either.

And because Nintendo didn't show support for nearly a decade, we shouldn't show them support when they finally do take steps to support competitive Smash? Seems like you are trying to destroy a community that you love, lol. If Nintendo did back it, or fund/arrange events (ect) do you know how big it could actually get?

Nintendo wasn't there for us when this thing started, and we had to make it a thing ourselves. I know and I get it. They're going to stick a toe of support in when we could use them diving in head first, I get that too. Sometimes though, you just gotta let shit go its natural course, man.

This is the kind of progression Nintendo needs to be doing. Kudos to them for finally opening their eyes! :D

Hellz yeah.

Lame. If they wanted to partner with a Genesis, version 1 is the one to go with.

Nice to see Smash 4 getting more popular in the competitive scene

more popular? you do realize that the Smash series is won of the most highly participated competitive games on the planet right? I doubt there is any other game with as many tournaments. ever since Melee its been one of the most intense competitive competition communities around
