Forums - Sales Discussion - Steam sales data 2015 (estimates)

Wow if true this quite horrible number.
So for 9 months the total revenue for steam sales is about $2.9 billion.
And valve claims to have over 125 million active users...

That equates to the average user only spending $23.40 for that entire period or about $2.6 per month.
And this revenue not profit ... even assuming valve gets 1/3 that leaves $975 million then you have employee costs, maintenance costs, building costs, other development and marketing costs, and taxes. After all is said and done they might only make $200-$300 million. Then whatever is left over probably has to go as payments to investors.

No wonder Half life 3 was never made they can't afford to. Imagine if they made a mistake and a big budget game like that didnt sell. Thats what happened to many defunct publishers.

It;s not that I underestimate, it's that I feel a rift in who primarily games on a PC and another who plays chess on it or a few games from 20 years ago but plays most of today's games on another system, I mean if we go with stretched definitions then I'm officially a newspaper editor ebcause I happen to own a typewriter and can use it whenever possible, I don't own an up to date model but it counts for something right?.

In the end we all have our main prefs, despite owning multiple platforms there is a definition for what we are based on what we currently game on, otherwise like before with the stretching of definitions, we're all PC gamers and yet that isn't really a true thing.

I have 234 games on Steam, practically all the games on Battle.net, 13 games over on GoG and about 10 on Origin.

Here's your original quote:

"I'm also fascinated with how this site has gained a small interest in PC sales data despite the user base on here being very minute and well the majority of users not being generally interested in the platform"

"not being generally interested in the platform" =/= not being someone who primarily games on PC

If what you mean by generally interested in PC gaming is that they have a high end graphics card, mostly game on PC and own a lot of games (let's say 100+), then yeah, a majority of the users here are generally not interested in the platform. Heck, a majority of Steam users aren't interested in the PC platform (and we're talking a massive majority here). Even a majority of PC only gamers aren't interested in the platform. If that's what you consider being generally interested in the platform then you shouldn't be surprised that there aren't a lot of them on this site, because there aren't a lot of them period.

Funny thing is you can see which fanbases cheaped out the most on their games using steam key. MGS5 and Dark Souls generated more revenue despite having smaller userbase

GTA is a friggin' beast! I guess the only thing that could stop GTA V from selling is GTA VI.

Thanks for posting this NiKKoM.

Good numbers all around and some pleasing surprises like Cities Skylines, ARK and Civ V, that 5 years later is still a beast.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting. I use Steam Spy a fair bit out of casual interest, just to get a rough idea of how games on the top sellers list on Steam or new releases on Steam look to be doing.

I wonder why some games aren't included on that final chart? CS:GO is at 4.6 million and ARK is at 1 million units on the revenue chart.

The "Top 2015 games by estimated sales on Steam" is only for games released in 2015. And also ARK is included in that chart, but strangely enough it has a different unit number in the revenue chart.

I don't really find it weird at all. This is a site that's dedicated to tracking sales, and I think a lot of users here have a sort of "abnormal" (for lack of a better word) interest in these kinda numbers and metrics. It's the same reason why quite a few people here are rather interested in the Box Office I think. It's just that up until recently, we had no semi-relaible source for sales on PC, but now we do.

I see people using Steamspy quite a lot here when discussing sales really.

And also I think you underestimate the amount of people that game on PC here. Just because someone is primarily a console gamer doesn't mean they don't have a Steam account and own a fair few games. (I consider myself a "console gamer" but last year I almost only gamed on PC, and while my library isn't as astronomically large as some PC gamers' is, I do have 48 games in my Steam library).

I agree.  I see no reason to be exclusionary.  It creates an unnecessary divide.  The main point is that someone plays videogames.  What I especially like about PC is how it's gathering up users who might play most AAA releases on consoles but are picking up smaller titles and PC exclusives on Steam.  The more people who do this, the less we have to hear from the crowd that likes to attack PC gaming at every turn.

I do hope that people read the stats and notice it's all using Stream Spy because as the article states SS is not 100% accurate.

I'm also fascinated with how this site has gained a small interest in PC sales data despite the user base on here being very minute and well the majority of users not being generally interested in the platform and I know people don't just live their life to look at PC sales and nod their head on a forum, there's more reason to be "intrigued" than that.

You're on a sales site, and yet are surprised at interest in video game sales numbers. Put the tinfoil down, with the lack of real data from publishers and NPD, people take whatever they can get.

So happy about the Cities: Skyline sales. If I was naive, I'd say it might have shown EA the error of their ways but well... it's EA we're talking about here.

Nah, Skylines has "only" sold about two million copies. EA doesn't bother unless they can sell at least twice that much.
