The NX idea is not bad, merging a console with a handheld.
BUT
Nintendo fans have been claiming for a powerful console, how could a Dual console be viable with these parameters?
In order to be portable, it cant be big.
In order to be powerful, it cant be small.
Big Dilemma.
IMHO it makes more sense to launch them at the same time (if they can provide enough software for both of them):

I don't know, the PS4 is in full force now and a I don't think the market is ready for a new home console now. It seems risky to me. Too bad Nintendo has given up on Wii U marketshare. If they had dropped the price they could have sold Wii Us for at least two more full years. But the situation is not easy as they had to return to profits. |
Market share is very important, but knowin Nintendo (super conservative) they are more concerned with profits not marketshare.
since they haven't focused on marketshare, they are left with a riskier console launch, but it's better than riding out the Wii u any longer (especially so given the wii u specs)

Riding on the Wii U longer would mean being able to launch the new handheld, make what it take to make it successful and then only care about launching a home console. Launching a new console is always risky.
Killing the Wii U early may not please all the one who buy the Wii U and who are the core of Nintendo fanbase. But the first reason is the best, Nintendo can't launch two consoles at the same times and 3DS sales are declining.

Not as of last year, where the Wii U only had 2 newly announced games for it versus the 3DS' 5.
Nintendo isn't truely supporting either system anymore, so I expect both will be replaced by some sort of fusion concept.
Kind of a dual system!
Realistic ideas =
1. Almost all Wii U games could be playable on the next console.
2. They may very well drop the game pad! make the console much more powerful and allow it to play all Wii U games while keeping all existing eshop content and expanding it. This keeps Wii u owners happy and feeling a little less betrayed.
3. Allow the N3DS to be used for off screen and remote play. While also letting the n3ds games be played on the TV while connected to the nx. This also ties their markets and brings on board a massive existing group of n3ds owners.
1 outlandish idea = virtual reality......because cartoony vr would be awesome.
2 outlandish idea = Nintendo also recently patented some funky holographic screen that sources from a flat pen like object and shines upward. Meaning the screen can disappear completely, can be flexible in shape and size and would be revolutionary. Just sayin......
3 Outlandish idea = offer something attractive. Something like 5 free games with nx purchase.

I was thinking of the 2016 lineup. If we don't count the games already released in some region (because they thechnically have been released already), we have Pokkem Fighters (console version, not arcade), Mario & Sonic at the olimpics, StarFox Zero, Project Guard and Robot, Twilight Princess and Zelda U against Metroid Prime FF, Hyrule Warriors Legends and Mario & Sonic olimpic games. Even if we take into account a possible Pokemon Z and other titles not announced for both platforms, the WiiU has more games that are also bigger heavy hitters.
But yeah, I agree with you, Nintendo stopped supporting this gen and it's preparing the NX with all their studios.
