Market share is very important, but knowin Nintendo (super conservative) they are more concerned with profits not marketshare. since they haven't focused on marketshare, they are left with a riskier console launch, but it's better than riding out the Wii u any longer (especially so given the wii u specs) |
Riding on the Wii U longer would mean being able to launch the new handheld, make what it take to make it successful and then only care about launching a home console. Launching a new console is always risky.
Killing the Wii U early may not please all the one who buy the Wii U and who are the core of Nintendo fanbase. But the first reason is the best, Nintendo can't launch two consoles at the same times and 3DS sales are declining.
