Forums - Nintendo - Is install base really that important for Nintendo IP?

Basically every gamer friend I have has a handful of Wii U games they want, but aren't willing to spring for the system. I mean, it's every person I talk to--they would ALL love to play the latest Mario or Zelda, but they're just not interested enough to actually buy the system just for those games. Not even close.

Yeah, install base matters. Wii games didn't sell that much more because it was an artificially inflated install base consisting of people who wanted nothing but Wii Sports and the like. With an install base of 150 million actual gamers, things would be different. This has gone back for several generations.

How does that explain why most of these franchises sales have stayed stagnant whether they were on NES, SNES, Gameboy, N64, GBA, DS?

This, Bascially most poeple I know and myself included all would love to play around 2-4 Wii U games but never will as it means forking out another £250 for a console. If Nintendo could match the other consoles third party support WII U could potentially be up to an install base somewhat closer to the PS4 imo and thats something the NX really needs to aim for.

Thus isn't specifically about Wii U, my point is that many Nintendo games sell in a certain range regardless of how big the install base is.

Well yeah. Just look at Wii and Wii U software sales.

For 3DS Pokemon, it's declined over the DS versions. The difference is astounding tbh.

Like I said in the OP, as long as the install base is big enough to support strong sales.

The decline from DS Pokemon sales is actually minimal, according to Nintendo's official shipments Pokemon D/P sold 17.~ million and B/W sold 15.~ million, X/Y were over 14 million at the last update and still growing. That's with being on a device with close to 100 million less units sold.

I'd say it's most important on Nintendo consoles on the Wii U.

Some games on the system had sold way more than others, and had there been a much bigger install base, the slaes of these games would've been affected greatly.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Depends on the size and composition of the userbase. Even a small userbase is enough, if there are enough users interested in the game. On the other hand, a large userbase is almost useless if not enough users are interested in the game. You need enough of right users or the ability to convert 'wrong' users into 'right' ones.

tl;dr: It's the amount of interested users that matters, not the amount of all users.

That is your best case? Really?

So why the CoD sales on Wii shrank with every new title? http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=call+of+duty&publisher=&platform=Wii

Did the Wii install base get smaller from 2006 to 2011?

Yes, I know Wii U is not big enough of an install base, hence why I said a game can't sell 15 million on a 10 million install base. My point is that games I outlined along with other Nintendo IP have seen little to no notable growth on bigger install bases.

Metroid II, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid: Other M all sold roughly 1.5 million give or take.

Kirby's Adventure, Dream Land 2, Kirby 64, Nightmare in Dreamland, The Amazing Mirror, Squeak Squad, Super Star Ultra, Epic Yarn, Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe all sold roughly 2 million give or take.

Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire, Diamond & Pearl, Black & White, X & Y, all have or will have sold between 15-18 million. FireRed & LeafGreen, HeartGold & SoulSilver, OmegaRuby & AlphaSapphire have all sold 10-12 million.

Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, Mario 64 DS, Mario 3D Land have or will have all sold roughly 12 million.

Ya his post made no sense, considering this thread is about Nintendo IP and how many times the games sell within a certain range regardless of how big the install base is.

The install base is important. But to a certain point. It's like a bottle with water. You can get a gallon bottle to store 3 quarts of water. But the rest is useless. But it's better than only having a two quart bottle. Once the install base is big enough. That's it. Nothing will help a game improve than its usual ceiling. Except for the randomness of outside influences. You can even make games look horrible this way too.

Take COD. It sells 15 milion copies. That's amazing. But if you look at the install base, of say 80 million. It's shit. Anything would look bad. If you looked at it that way. Take the Super Bowl. It usually gets 120 million viewers. If I'm right. Compared to the whole US population. Not even half watch it. That's why for Pokemon. The DS runaway sales loss. Doesn't really matter, for the 3DS games.
