I just saw it again...packed, NYC, IMAX 3D theater (It was quite difficult to get any good tickets this weekend, and the other IMAX was sold out all 3 days.). Clearly, most of the audience hadn't seen, as evidenced by the cheering and gasps (You know when.). It may have legs in the US yet, but I don't know about RoW (I wouldn't expect a final 50/50 split.).

Watched it for second time yesterday and it was packed out. Smaller screen, but packed.

The question for Star Wars on china now is, did the Chinese ppl like it ? We know China has very different tastes than we do on the west and the franchise isnt nearly as big there as it is here, the thinical variety of the cast can be a big problem for the movie in China as well, a country that isnt exactly very acepting of different races and that dont give much space to women. So it all depends on the reaction of these first moviegoers, if they loved it we could potentialy see this movie having awesome legs, otherwise it will probably drop fast and follow the Terminator genesis model, wich opened with 30M and ended with just 150M.

I predict itll make around 200-250M on China. Avatar is 100% out of the question now, the movie will break 2 billion worldwide, probably gona make it past Titanic but will end its run 300-500M bellow Avatar.

Yup, i don't see it catching Avatar unless it gets second wind some how and China goes wild for it.

Looks like it has started off well in China with a record breaking $33million opening.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/star-wars-7-opens-in-china-breaks-records-with-33-/1100-6433657/

It's great, but not record breaking.  It's behind Avengers 2 and Furious 7.  That article is poorly written, considering they have to throw in it released on Sat to count as breaking a record and doesn't say anything about the actual #1 and #2.  Anyway, I could definitely see it slightly less than Furious 7 overall, maybe even matching depending on how it holds.

It's also insane how well furious 7 did in China. TFA doing just half of that would be great.

In Ireland the film has got 7.7 million as of Wednesday 6th of January. avatar is at 8.7 million. star wars made 4.7 million in 2015 and 3 million in the first 6 days of 2016. thats between 20-25% of the population has seen the movie all together.

I'm wondering if that is in local currency, since TFA is doing pretty good in local curency but it look bad when you change it to USD copared to Avatar since the currency exchange is less favorable now.

You know now that SW isn't the biggest movie of all time.

It will just have to settle for being the biggest franchise of all time and the most valuable movie "force" in Hollywood by a country mile.

Disney would not trade Star Wars for Avatar + Terminator + Aliens combined. They are going to be making Star Wars movies 20 years from now and reaping huge profits. They completely ripped George Lucas off at $4 billion, that price was highway robbery, TFA alone will probably return somewhere close to that.

That $900+ domestic take likely won't be beaten anytime soon either. Not bad for the *seventh* film in a franchise that's almost 40 years old.

Let Disney have their movie but plenty of people thought this would beat Avatar and even make $3B. I guess the bad/weak story prevented it from having the legs required to do so.

Neither really have a great story. Neither does Jurassic World or Avengers. They're just big spectacles. TFA has the larger issue of basically having to set up Ep. VIII and IX too, you can't just blow your wad on the first act.

Avatar 2 IMO will not beat The Force Awakens either, especially if the "gimmick" is just high-frame rate. I watched the Hobbit at 60 fps or whatever it was, it looks like shit. Makes the movie look like it was shot on a video camcorder.

I think Star Wars Rogue One is going to do massive business next year too. Disney is going to make a fortune with this franchise. It is the golden goose.
