It's not coming close to Avatar in Australia as it dropped 57% from the opening week-end to an amount that's a little over Avatar's 3rd week-end.

Well Avatar increased in it's 3rd weekend compared to it's second in Australia, the same can happen for SW since new years is a bigger weekend internationaly compared to christmas weekend.

Also fo their second weekends, SW made 3 million more than Avatar in local currency, but once again due to the hugely favorable exchange rate in 2009/10, it equalled to only 700k more in USD.

SW might actually outsell Avatar in number of tickets worldwide, but too bad we might never get official numbers for those.

UPDATED OP.

MON = $75,062,029 WW

It actually made 70.8 milion Monday, that extra 4 million is because the international numbers were higher than first estimated for the weekend.

Now my thoughts for  those Monday international numbers: They are truly epic and are showing fantastic legs it grossed 39.4 million compared to 41.7 million, those a damn nice hold, only a 5.5% drop.

It might not reach Avatar but that is due to the unfavorable exchange rate (at least partly due to this), hopefully it's legs continue to be strong.

I'm predicting 63 million for tomorrow WW, I believe domestic will drop a bit more than international since I read that there was a holiday in Canada yesterday.

Edit: Actually it seems there wasn't any holidays yesterday, the last one was boxing day on Saturday, can any Canadian confirm if there was an unofficial holiday yesterday? Or was that which I read wrong?

ah okay :)

No chance it outsells Avatar in terms of number of tickets sold. In Australia, in local currency, Avatar grossed $114,608,462. SW will not even come close to $100M 6 years later.

It's true that TFA had a steep drop in its 2nd week-end in Australia, but let's wait and see how it does this week-end before giving a final conclusion. The 3D shares for these movies and different exchange rates are also making it hard to judge how they truly compare to each other in admissions.

For anyone interested, here are some stats displaying ticket sales between Titanic, Avatar and the SW franchise across key EU markets.

I think Episode VIII could outgross Episode VII internationally, provided it's a good movie.

Star Wars still has a ways to go in international markets in part because the prequels weren't very good movies so The Force Awakens is coming with some baggage tied to it in some markets where the Star Wars brand hasn't yet taken off.

TFA is currently tracking $300M ahead of Avatar after just 12 days and it will surely grow to 500 by the end of next week. I think there is a real chance that TFA grosses $1,1 billion+ in the domestic box office and if it grosses $350-400 in China, then it has a really good chance of surpassing Avatar.

The Numbers already has Tuesdays domestic numbers but unfortunately they failed to include TFA numbers.
