Forums - Gaming Discussion - Head of Crystal Dynamic (Square) no longer part of the studio, Tomb Raider sales a factor in his departure?

- posted some hours ago in the Tomb Raider tumblr

"In other news, at the end of this year, Darrell Gallagher will be leaving Square Enix after more than 10 years with the company. Darrell has worked as Square Enix’s Head of Product Development and Western Studios, where he shepherded this year’s successful launches of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft Go, Life is Strange and Just Cause 3, and queued up major launches for next year, including Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Hitman. Prior to that, he was Crystal Dynamics’ Studio Head, where he led many projects including the reboot of Tomb Raider. Darrell has helped create so much incredible entertainment during his time with Square Enix, and we all thank him for his incredible contribution."

- Ron Rosenberg and Scot Amos have been named as co-studio heads for Crystal Dynamics

Could it be that Rise of the Tomb Raider sales had something to do with Gallagher's departure? What do you think?

That would suck since the flop of Tomb raider is only Square Enix+Microsoft fault

Well, if he was asked to say all this:

“We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal,” he said. “I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming.

Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past – we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special – the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.” – David Gallagher, Crystal Dynamics

I can't say how much of an impact the sales of Rise of the Tomb Raider had on this decision to step down as head of Crystal Dynamics. I speculate that Darrell Gallagher doesn't want to make the head decisions for multiple major Western franchises at Square-Enix. Maybe it was too much of a workload, maybe there are creative differences with some of these franchises going forward, maybe deciding what to do with the Tomb Raider brand in the near future wasn't something Gallagher wanted to do.

Whatever the reason, he did a great job making decisions that lead to great games from the Western branch of Square-Enix; especially when you consider how poorly the Eastern branch of SE has been for the past 10 years.

How would sales be his fault though?...

I wonder if he was at fault for the Tomb Raider decision? Can't say im sorry he had to fall on his sword for it if thats the case.

While I feel sorry for the guy himself if he was let go, every little thing that makes this Rebooted impostor disappear as soon as possible and make them rethink how they treat legacy of real TR is a plus.

Maybe he was the one that pushed the exclusive marketing partnership with Microsoft, which sent the game to its death?

More than likely he's just taking the fall and getting a buy out.

Doubt it. His position is one that assists in making those decisions. The Xbox fanbase obviously doesn't support games like Tomb Raider. At the very least, he had the power to stop it.
