I can't say how much of an impact the sales of Rise of the Tomb Raider had on this decision to step down as head of Crystal Dynamics. I speculate that Darrell Gallagher doesn't want to make the head decisions for multiple major Western franchises at Square-Enix. Maybe it was too much of a workload, maybe there are creative differences with some of these franchises going forward, maybe deciding what to do with the Tomb Raider brand in the near future wasn't something Gallagher wanted to do.
Whatever the reason, he did a great job making decisions that lead to great games from the Western branch of Square-Enix; especially when you consider how poorly the Eastern branch of SE has been for the past 10 years.
