My system is ready for DX12 games, but I have no big expectations so far.

Here is a (short) list of DX12 titles we should see in 2016 and in most of them DX12 is optional... so where are the "built from the ground up" DX12 games?

Why would I be excited when I had it for months?

Friendly advice from me, don't go 4k yet. It's not worth it since the hardware still isn't there. SLI is always a suboptimal choice and current highend single GPUs are not up to the task to deliver proper 60fps@4k without having to make concessions. What makes it worse is that not even the current transfer technologies aren't even there yet. DP and HDMI only go so far.

If you're still on 1080p then go 1440p next and in 2-3 years switch to 4k when there's actually the hardware to support it.

Display Port 1.3 allows 4k in 120 FPS or two 4k Displays in 60 Fps so it goes far enough.

To OP:

The 980 TI can handle 4k at 30 FPS on max settings. Unless you decrease quality you will need SLI.

It is possible to have a 4k 60fps rig that works if money is of no concern.

Autumn 2016 the new cards should come. 14-16nm GPUs which should handle 4k gaming without issue.

So I would for sure wait with it, however if you have the cash its possible right now or if you are satisifed with 30 FPS or if you are willing to compromise on a few settings.

Bur none of the current cards has DisplayPort 1.3, so his point is still valid, for proper 4K you'll need one of the next gen cards.

No, because its a propriatary piece of soctware and Vulkan is also just around the corner.

And so was DX11 while OpenGL was open, and that didn't stop DX11 to be the most used of both solutions.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

I'm still keeping my hopes up that Vulkan and OpenGL will end DX one day.

That will depend on the devs and which one is earier to use, that's why DX11 won. Now, with more games being ported to Linux and even MacOS, things could change but, as the table that Conina has posted shows, it doesn't look promising.

Same. I;m also betting that they are going to go with 2017/18 for another shot at "we're bringing games built from the ground up on DX 12" speech by then like we had already a year ago, I'm still waiting.

I haven't switched to 10 yet but I'll probably throw some more upgrades towards my rig and then buy 10 later on once the DX 12 games start landing. I also wouldn't mind Vulkan taking fof but I know DX 12 will likely be the most used since for years DX has always taken the top space over Open GL, this won't change much either.

I've seen the list of games on steam that work on Mac OSX and Linux expand signicantly over the past few years. But I'm afraid many were ported over on anticipation of Steam OS and the lukewarm perception of that OS might slow this trend down. If not, Vulkan might help improve the Steam OS performance significantly, and when developers can choose to devlop on DX12 and port it over to Mac and Linux or use Vulkan and have minimal problems with porting the games, Vulkan might win in the end (note the "might).

You know Windows 10 is a free upgrade (forced really?) for many and it would be wierd not to upgrade to Windows 10 since its the best preforming Windows since 7. If you plan on gaming on PC with an older WIndows then good luck because the support for those versions will only be decreasing as time goes on. As for Vulkan i havent heard enough about it to get excited about. I dont plan on running my games on Linux or a Steam Machine since i use my Gaming rig for many things not just gaming so DX12 will be the bigger benefit for me and it also benefits the XB1 and other MS devices. Plus i am a huge Blizzard fan who use DirectX over OpenGL.

Can't wait to buy brand new gaming PC 2016 next year.

I dont think thats what MS meant when they said built from the ground up. I have no doubt that many up and coming PC games will still have the options of previous versions of DX and OGL since PC is a wide audience with many different configurations. Built from ground up will mean games designs with DX12 in mind and then having other options incase your PC card cannot run the game with DX12.

For example, I was playing EvE Online the other day and finially switched it to DX11 instead of DX9, now EvE online isnt design around DX12 so when that option becomes available i dont expect much difference where as Deus Ex MD is most likely being built around DX12 but will be optimised to also run on DX11 so i would be expecting a bigger difference where as Fable Legends i expect nothing more then a smooth experince etc.

Either way time will tell. DX12 is only going to benefit those who have Windows 10 so we arent losing anything from it. If it pushes my i7 more or my GPU more then its welcome.
