Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Patent Shows Freeform Display For (NX?) Controller/Portable

If this is the controller though (button configurations aside) more or less, and lets even throw in haptic feedback sensation ... NX is going to have to be very powerful IMO. This isn't enough of a "gimmick" to bring back the soccer mom crowd, it's basically just a sleeker take on the existing Wii U controller idea.

The have to go with higher end specs IMO (supplementary powered/cloud power sharing). This is no Wiimote style "revolution" in control.

WTF? does this mean they re doing away with physical buttons on their controller?
Time for the nintendo controller thats actually just a touch screen? >_>'

This is going to flop, alot of people really like the "feel" of a controller in their hands,

and haveing actual buttons to press is something most wont settle for not haveing.

*edit:  I like the concept and the idea & design options this gives though... im kinda torn on it atm.

Im not a fan of the gamepad as a controller either, but could use it if I had too in some games.

However if this gives more buttons, or enables better gameplay due to more buttons ect, I can see the reasoning for removeing physical buttons.

Oh, because "haveing" actual buttons give you "alot" more accuracy? I imagine your computer keyboard has buttons, unless you've been "removeing" them, and it hasn't helped with your accuracy.

Try being friendly, kay?

The problem with "virtual buttons" is how are you supposed to know what you're pressing if you're not looking down at the controller entirely?

There has to be physical buttons otherwise I don't see how functional this could be.

It could use haptic feedback..

This is also what I thought

It's worth mentioning these patetents (this and the other one http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=210893&page=1# ), were presented by Nintendo 1 year and a half ago.
Add even more time since you need a legal evaluation before writing the patent, so, in a few words, we are probably looking at almost 2 years old concepts.

Yes, all this recent Nintendo patents are all old around year and half.

I think what we are looking at it a optional form factor of the NX handheld. One that's designed to be a bridge between ios and the next console.

Very interesting, I can't wait for NX reveal!

What I get from this:

Controller has 2 sticks and shoulder buttons.

The screen can display different number of buttons, all of them according to the game. For example, for a Zelda game the controller can display 3 buttons for items, one for actions (A) and one for the sword (B).

For a 2D Mario Game maybe it will only display 3 buttons: one to run, one to jump and one to use powerups.

For some kind of Metroid Prime game for example it can display the different beams.

For the buttons, not only haptic feedback can work, but also tactus:

I expect the console component to have a normal controller and this to be optional.

All in all, I like the concept and I'm willing to try.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised if they were even trying digital sticks, but maybe those are to early to be functional enough, thus they only focused on face buttons.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

I think this could be the controller, but it could have more face buttons or maybe the option to over lay more physical buttons if you want.

Like maybe you could slide a physical transparent overlay that has physical B/A/X/Y buttons and a d-pad to go with the two sticks.

I have loved and STILL love Nintendo dearly. I grew up with them and I am a part of the original NES generation but if they release a console without physical buttons then sadly, I think it's over for them.

You can't compete with iPads and iPhones. You can't can't compete with PS4 and Xbox One without buttons so, we'd be right back in the same old boat that we're in now and this boat is taking on water fast. Nintendo has to fight head on this time because there's no other market to exploit. It's either the hard core gamer, or game over.
