Forums - Nintendo - So the Wii U did not get an official price cut this Holiday season?

As others have stated they care more about profit per system over increasing their marketshare. Besides, Nintendo aren't like Sony and Microsoft where they can afford to lose money on their gaming division because they have all of these other divisions in other businesses that they can make money off of, so that even if the take a loss in gaming, they still profit overall.
If Nintendo loses money on their gaming division, they lose money period.

And it'd be a different scenario if the Wii U was genuinely competing with the PS4 and XBO. But since it's a distant last, with all of its heavy hitters already released with the exception Zelda. Nintendo doesn't have any games left at their disposal that can push systems. And since 3rd Parties have completely abandoned it entirely.
The Wii U is a lost cause. That's why we know about NX in the first place.

Not unlike Nintendo to do this. As cream147 stated this is one area that has always bothered me about Nintendo is there unwillingness to lower prices. They did this even with the Wii and Wii games when they were top in sales last generation.

As others have pointed out, it looks like NX is right around the corner so perhaps they are just treading water.

At lease Xenoblade Chronicles X will likely keep me busy on my Wii U until NX releases and I see if it is worth the purchase.

My PC and Xbox One get most of my time regardless.

My store has the same ones sitting on the shelves since the black Friday sale went away. How in the hell do they expect to sell any when it is back up at the PS4 price point?

Suppose they're making $50 profit on each system they sell. If they drop the price by just $20, they have to see a boost in sales of 66% just to make the same profit. Obviously, I haven't factored in the profit from game sales, but at the same time, I also haven't used solid numbers for the amount of profit they get per system... and let's be realistic - they could have the dropped the price by half, and it still isn't going to come close to an average 66% boost in sales.

Nintendo's in this for money, not units sold. They aren't going to convince the third parties to come back to the Wii U, so boosting sales won't help them get more games on the system.

And that's why, rather than dropping prices, they're bundling more.

Nintendo's in this for money, not units sold

this is an issue for their next console though. Nintendo should be worried about both market share and profit. If the NX launches while the wii u is a dud and everyone is focused on the ps4 and xbox one, people will have a harder time shifting away their focus from sony and microsoft, unless sony and microsoft make mistakes. This is why the wii got lucky, sony released an expensive console and microsoft released a console known for the RROD. This is a reason why the wii u had a hard time selling, because the end of the 7th generation had people focused on sony and microsoft

Nintendo is not going to risk anything for the Wii U. People who think they are serious about supporting this system long term in a big way are naive.

Nintendo's philosophy this generation is basically to get out of this nightmare of a hardware cycle without losing any more money than need be.

Problem is that their next system will be out too early. They should have committed to the Wii U for at least a year longer than they did. Timing is very important in the console business, releasing two systems in the same generation is suicide.

A price cut is unnecessary at this point

How so!?

PS4 has official price of $349, Wii U or $299, both has current price cuts for $50.

Which rumors? Because all of them points to a 2016 release date.

Recent ones I have seen here and on reddit. More so now than before. I still see a lot of 2016 rumors as well though. But if it is 2017, this is really disappointing. I had a plan to get to 20 million in 3 more years, now that could be ruined... :(

I only saw only that Patcher said, but he is usually much more wrong than right, so if he say NX is 2017. thing better chances are that NX is 2016. thing. All other infos that I saw are point for 2016. NX launch.

I think Nintendo decided in 2014 to ditch the Wii U. By then they knew full well it wasn't going to be the success they wanted it to be.

Iwata even said in 2014 that they were working on a new definition of gaming and it would take two years to realize that goal (2016). They also signed a deal with Sharp for free-form LCD displays in late 2014, displays that wouldn't be available until ... 2016.

We now know due to patent leaks that those free form LCDs are for a game controller/or portable, not for Quality of Life.

NX has been a go for 2016 since 2014 IMO. Nintendo IMO shifted development of Animal Crossing (the REAL AC), the next 3D Mario, and several other 2016/17 Nintendo titles to NX a long time ago IMO.

Development kits have already been give out to third parties for a while, which means Nintendo's own internal studios must've had kits for several months prior to even that.
