As others have stated they care more about profit per system over increasing their marketshare. Besides, Nintendo aren't like Sony and Microsoft where they can afford to lose money on their gaming division because they have all of these other divisions in other businesses that they can make money off of, so that even if the take a loss in gaming, they still profit overall.
If Nintendo loses money on their gaming division, they lose money period.
And it'd be a different scenario if the Wii U was genuinely competing with the PS4 and XBO. But since it's a distant last, with all of its heavy hitters already released with the exception Zelda. Nintendo doesn't have any games left at their disposal that can push systems. And since 3rd Parties have completely abandoned it entirely.
The Wii U is a lost cause. That's why we know about NX in the first place.
