Forums - Gaming - What the hell is going on with the 8th gen?

I have to see how many episodes of FF7 there will be and how much will they cost to make a final decision. We could always just wait for the full release, but then again I dont trust SE to make these in a timely fashion.

I find the final question to this thread to be a bit funny, as I feel it's a little off topic from everything presented.

That aside, personally, I find some of these practices terrible. I just shake my head when games announce their extra content before the game is even released, and for 60 dollar MP games, I'm not quite sure what to say about them. I suppose Splatoon can fall under that, but it came with a single player as well, and the MP has been really fun, although the game did first release with less than usual. But that has been given a good amount since its release.

And for episodic, I'm not a fan of that either. My solution is to just buy the complete pack when it releases.

My solution for these practices, I just don't buy games that perform them or wait for complete packages. Unfortunately, I think these things won't go away, since people will buy them anyways -_-

If you look at the trend in video games gen after gen, it was only a matter of time actually.

Sad truth is that we all contributed a great part in this evolution.

Can't say much about FFVII:R and it being episodic until we get more in-depth details and pricing.

But if I were to judge now then I'd say I'm not liking the idea. I'm afraid by the time I play 'episode 2', i'd probably lost touch and already forgotten where the story left off and how to play. As well, possibly my love/hype for the game might diminish due to the wait of each episode.

IMO I do not like a lot of the new practices but they are not going anywhere.

Great points throughout, however........

Just like re-masters and re-makes will keep coming, so will episodes, chapters, whatever you want to call it. Gamers will buy it, and the publishers know this.

Each year we complain, threaten to boycott, and shout things like "Gamers Unite!", and then .............Star Wars Battlefront sells over 3 million copies week 1, not counting the revenue from dlc.

We sometimes rant about it pre-release, and then buy it regardless. It is the cost of entry to enjoy some of the games we love.

Several games has been releasing incomplete to extort more and more consumers beyond clear of micro transactions an example is battlefront which released 50 % at stake and another 50 % will launch in dlc , I think pathetic as the square want to treat your best game history and its customers in delivering episodes to extort more money from them ( yes I am talking about Final Fantasy VII Remake ) miss my ps1 where only worry was whether the memory card have enough memory for the save .

So many of these things are to tastes or an inconvenience. For my last and current gen have been the most affordable ever with average game costing me $20. Sure, means I wait months for many games but given sheer amount of releases never bothers me. Also this gen is seeing a sort of Japanese renaissance so very excited about coming years.

We shouldn't have to keep labeling publishers as enemies ...

If you don't like the way they price content, don't force your belief in others because it's obvious you don't speak for everyone when it comes to these circumstances ...

Nothing is really wrong with 8th gen aside from the shrinking audience (attributed to Nintendo of course) ...

Nothing wrong with the episodes. You either get portions of the game early or you wait forever until it's done.

The pricing might be the only problem, but we don't have enough information.

First we have dlc and season passes announced before the game even comes out. Then we have full $60 multiplayer only games with barebones cotent.

And now we have games split into episodes as if its some fucking tv series. And we have we out here defending this garbage? EPISODES!? When has this practise become acceptable? I think this generation might turn out to be the worst by a massive margin. I can't even imagine where gaming will be at the end of it. Hell, there might just be another crash.

How do you feel about FF VII:R being episodic?

You seem to be only focusing on the negatives. DLC's for games are announced, because they are a way to generate momentum for a game when in reality, hype for most games die down after a month. This increases the lifespan of such games by a considerable amount. Example: Destiny the taken king has definitely resparked interest in the destiny franchise one year after launch. Season passes are made with a similar mindset. This is all great for developers, publishers, and the ip being worked on. You as the consumer get to decide if it is worth it. Seeing as how these things are selling, clearly the demand is there.

Games that also abuse this system recieve a lot of hate for it. You act as if nothing happens to these companies. Evolve was ripped to shreds because of their dlc models, Watch dogs was punished for over promising and then downgrading specs, Splatoon and driveclub were reviewed poorly for releasing with low content.

PS: your final question derails for your topic thread. You suddenly go from dissing this generation to talking about something you don't like for a specific game

Is FFVII:R actually going to be episodic, though? The only thing I've read on it is that they feel it will be to big to be only one game, so they will have multiple parts. The media is the only ones using the word "episodic". Three full length games (if that's what it ends up being) does not constitute "episodic", for example.
