End of next year it should whither especially with the NX coming along. I'm guessing less than 10m of sales left for it at this rate

2-3 years in japan, but considerable decline 1.5 years from now worldwide.

That's how it is every generation.
Gameboy Color-Oct 1998, Gameboy Advance-Spring 2001
Gameboy Advance SP-March 2003, Nintendo DS-Holiday 2004
Nintendo DSi-late 2008/early 2009, Nintendo 3DS-Q1 2011
New 3DS-late 2014/early 2015, NX-Holiday 2016

I think they will be releasing a handheld type of thing only in japan, where it still sells good. But in the west, I think they will concentrate on smartphones for their mobile games. While the numbers of the 3DS aren't particularly bad in europe and the US, they are also not anywhere near where Nintendo wants to be and I just don't see any potential for growth in that market at the moment. |
I "want" mobile games to actually be good games. But they exist in their states. Illogical reason to simply cut off millions in revenue, that isn't damaging.
I'm in the one more year camp.
Remember that may 2017 is the release of Dragon Quest XI so 2016 is definitely not the end of the 3DS. 2018 is the year when it will start to really go down. DS was still selling "well" in 2012 when 3DS was already out so I think 2018 will be 3DS final year :)
It's hard to say...
Historically Nintendo has been better at supporting handheld consoles late in their life than at supporting home consoles...
Just look at the DS...
After the release of the 3DS we saw a Kirby game, Pokemon Black/White, Black/White 2, and Pokemon Conquest...
While not immense support, those are definitely high profile releases...
Though it would be foolish of me not to consider the factor hardware sales played in that support...
Have a nice day...

Well Nintendo's other handhelds have gotten solid support after the next generation started. Gameboy Advance got Donkey Kong: King of Swing, Donkey Kong Country 3, Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, Mario Party Advance, Mario Tennis: Power Tour, WarioWare: Twisted, Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, Pokemon Emerald, Drill Dozer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Final Fantasy Advance IV, V, VI after Nintendo DS released.
