MGS 4: Sons of liberty Guns of the Patriots

Release date: June 12, 2008

# of sold copies: 774,647 (775k), the best selling game of June 2008

Platforms: PS3 exclusive

Hardware:

  • PS3: 405.5k (Sold for: $399 for the 40gb model & $499 for the 80gb model)
  • The Wii was the best selling homse console that month, moving 666.7k units. (Nintendo DS was the best selling console overall moving 783k units)
  • X360 sold 219,800 (for $349) units that month bring the total X360 sold to 10.5 units (vs 4.9 m for the PS3 & vs 10.9 for the Wii)

 

MGS 5: The Phantom Pain

Release date: September 1, 2015

# of sold copies: <800K (excluding digital & Steam sales), 3rd best game of Sept 2015 based on physical copies sold.  

Digital sales aren't neglibile in this day and age but no availabe data at the moment (MGS 4 wasn't availabe digitally at launch). 

MGS 5: Ground Zeroes was released in March, 2014 and it sold 278k in its first month according to NPD (again, neither digital nor PC numbers are included). Ground Zeroes served as a prologue for MGS 5:The Phantom Pain.

Platforms: PS4, XBO, X360, PS3, PC

Hardware:

  • PS4: 340k (sold for $399)
  • X1: 281k (sold for $350)
  • PS3 + X360: *missing data*

How on earth did MGS4 almost sell as much as MGSV considering 4 was only on one console and 4 had less time in June than MGSV had in September...Even not factoring in that MGSV is vastly superior...

Franchise fatigue, unnecesary entry on the saga, waiting for Christmas, boycotting Konami, boycotting Kojima, too expensive for its value, piracy, used games.

because the fanbase is mostly on PS platforms and japanese games don't sell well on Xbox platforms.

That's not negligible. It's probably above 1 million when you factor that in.



Digital sales are much higher now. Right now it has almost a 15k rating only in the US with 88k likes. Did mgs4 have a digital version at release? Dont remember.

It didn't. It only came out in December 2014 on PSN.
