Forums - Gaming - What's wrong with being a fanboy?

Good fan boy: "I enthusiastically enjoy this series, console, company, etc.!"

Bad fan boy: "My tastes are superior to all others! Your game, console, company, etc. sucks!"

At least its Honest.

In the age of anonymity, I respect Honesty more than veiled derision under guise of feigned neutrality.

What sayest thou?

Like anything else there are levels to being a fanboy and there are foks who are downright extremeists.  For example, look at crapgamer.   When you are willfully spreading misinformation and straight up lying, it becomes a problem.   Also, if you are attacking people on a personall level... then its a problem.

There's nothing wrong about being a fanboy. The problem lies with the loudmouths who tend to "hate" everything else that's not their console of preference.

There is nothing wrong with being a fanboy. Just do not let that totally cloud your judgment and screw with fans of other systems.

I am primarily a Sony/Playstation fan (85% of my gaming done on PS3/4)

I like this definition on fanboy:

"A person with an irrational attachment to a particular item or brand name, and an equally irrational dislike for competing brands or items."

So, everything about that in my book is bad. Being fan, sure, being fanboy, no.

But what about being a chum chum?

Don't be a dum dum :/

1. Closed minded to games outside your console/brand of choice so you miss out on great titles.
2. Downplay and or insult the success of a game/series on a rival console.
3. Most of the time very hostile towards any remarks or suggestions to your console/brand.
4. Will provide false or not whole truth information to make your preference look better.

All I can think of atm and while not always true, it does accrue.

Well, I suppose because they can be really annoying, people tend to dislike them. Personally, I don't care if someone wants to be unreasonable and childish. Their problem, not mine.

Gamer: "I'm looking forward to the new game in my favorite series."

Regular person: "if that's what you're into, that's fine. "

Fanboy: "That series sucks, the console sucks, they only make one series every year, it's not in 1080p, and you're gay for liking what I don't like.".

*Then, actively goes looking for bad news about said game to further make the game look like shit.*

I suppose it depends on how you define "fanboy." Many in this thread seem to define it as a passionate fan - nothing wrong with that.

However, I interpret the word in much more dangerous terms.

A "fanboy" is someone who defends a certain brand without logic or reason, and thus tends to make the community of video game fans much more hostile and suspicious. Fanboys also defend the honor of certain publishers, developers, and console manufacturers to the death, regardless of bad business decisions and unethical practices. This allows unscrupulous companies to get away with murder.
