so the Kinect took off?

The Kinect took off on both the 360 and Xbox One.
It sold very well on the 360 and helped push a lot of consoles to casuals while the Move sold poorly despite having the better games.
It took off $100 on the Xbox One when they removed it.

They succeeded at the cost of millions of dollars spent on R&D and losing this console generation. But clearly Move was the failure of the two

You didn't reply to the joke :(.
I think the millions of units that the Kinect helped push 360s to casuals the first year or two of its release more than mode up for its R&D. Even the millions of hardcore 360 owners who purchased it and a lot of the games that released for it thinking they might be quality content. Chromehounds sequel for example, Crimson Dragon? Those two certainly didn't have a million people interested, but the idea behind the Kinect and the possibility of quality games.
*edit*
After searching Google
"Kinect sales have reached 24 million units worldwide, Microsoft revealed last night during the All Things D: Dive Into Media event. This is 5 million more than the 19 million sold by May last year.Feb 12, 2013"
So in February 2013, Kinect is owned by more than one fourth of the 360 install base. That's more than GTA5 did on both Xbox consoles. Hardly a failure. Bundling it for the Xbox One, that in itself was a failure, but the Kinect itself? It's not. It made them a lot of money between the hardcore that purchased it and the casuals it got to purchase 360s.
