I can't choose. My mood switches from time to time, and I prefer the cultural collision than having to be stuck with just one of the two. I'd say japanese gaming edges western, for me,  for the sole reason that the most mindblowing games (not always in a good sense) I've played were made in Japan, and that's something always worth mentioning.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I like a variety, and Western and Japanese do enough differently to keep me interested in both styles of gaming.

Japanese games, to me, are by and large terrible. However, they also produce the occasional masterpiece, that ends up being one my favourite games of all time.

They really have pretty much no middle ground for me. There's not a single Japanese game I consider average, decent, or mediocre. They're either garbage or genius, but sadly it's mostly the former.

Both. I like to keep my options open.

Sometimes jap games are poor, sometimes they're not
Sometimes western games are poor, sometimes they're not.

Both equal.

My favorite games and game companies are all Japanese, so that's where I vote.

I can understand they both have their crap and masterpieces though.

Japan all the way, but I do like quite a few Western games.

Western games for FPS/indie and Japanese for everything else. Japanese games still feel like art. They have heart and soul to them and retain what console gaming is suppose to be imo.

Theoretically it'd be equal. And many years that might have been the answer, with only a slight edge towards Japanese. When FPSes were FPSes instead of first person Pong, when WRPGS were RPGs instead of conversation simulators with gameplay simpler and more repetitive than a basic musou (despite some good recent revivals like PoE), when action adventure meant crafted levels with memorable rooms, puzzles and storytelling instead of boring open worlds with as much character as a dinner table; when "AAAs" were closer to Blade Runner than Star Wars.
Now it's 90% Japanese and 10% western, and it's not even a matter of replacement. The Japanese bubble did not grow, the western one just shrunk. The void is there.
On the bright side that does make some of the good western releases seem more special.. Like an endangered species waiting for you to hug it. My next hug is Doom 4. I'll squeeze its box art neatly and hope it showers me with blood.

Western but i do enjoy the big jrpgs such as final fantasy and kindom hearts etc
