Forums - Microsoft - Brilliant - Why backwards compatibility matters!

Idk, everytime MS makes a big deal about something, they always seem to forget about it 6 months later. Like Cinect, or Titanfll, KillerStinkt

Its brilliant move? MS takes the time to modify each game which will cost them more money than they will benefit. Its not my cup of tea because your physical xbox 360 games will need the internet for this.

I can't believe that after so many times the issue has been discussed, I have to see such uninformed posts on this forum.

Well, they got criticized for focussing on Cinect for YEARS after it was released at the expense of "real games"--they even believed in it enough to make its successor a pack in with each Xbox One console.  They didn't make Titanfll so....what should they have done?  And KillerStinkt still gets regular new content and a total overhaul from when it was launched almost two years ago.  So, it may seem like they forget about something but I guess things aren't always what they seem.

Some other companies have similar track records like the EarToy (or the PS4 Cumera), the Wii Motion Minus, or the Playstation Moo.  It's not just M$.  I could write an essay on abandoned concepts, games, and peripherals.

Just saw the Apple Presentation... not looking good for Xbox. That was everything MS wanted to do and more. The voice control was sooooo much better, made xbox look very bad by comparison. Feel bad for the xbox division they did their best.

You have a link? I didn't even know apple was doing something.  Would love to see how they compare.

Backwards compatibility is always a good thing. The issue lies in what type of backwards compatibility. For me, Hardware emulation is the far superior choice. Software emulation is great, but not every game you have ever wanted to play is guaranteed.

Why emulate, when you can play it on PC

Henry-San, I believe you misunderstood. Let me state my case as such;

The PS1 to PS2 artitechtures both used similar artitechures. As such, not only did this make the transition easier for the developers who had prior knowledge for creating games for the next system, but it also paved the way for gamers who didn't have a PS1 for various reasons to still play their games on PS2; without worry. This is what I meant as hardware emulation.

For the software emulation, let us use the best current example; the Xbox One. Microsoft stated that well over 100 games will be avaliable from the Xbox 360 era. Games such as Lost Odessey would be on this list. However, certain video games may not be there. Let us take The Last Remnant for example. While it was a great game, there is no gurantee that said game will be on the list. This also applies to other 360 exclusives that may not make it onto the One's backwards compatibility list. Every game that individual may have wanted to play due to unavaliability (Shadow Complex) or potential missed oppurtunity might not make the list due to various reasons.

To conclude, I do concur with your PC statement... to a degree. I do like the emulation aspect that the PC provides, but we are physical beings in a physical world. We need to able to own physcial content; regardless of medium. However, in the same aspect, obtaining a game like Snatcher or Super Turrican 2 is nigh-impossible, so emulation is the next best option. As such, there is a silver lining for both.

Actually, I'm implying that rather than simply emulation, MS also released many Xbox games for PC as well, since they have been ported to PC, they would run much better than that on the XB1. I'm willing to bet that their are more PC - Xbox games right now then XB1 bwcompatible games atm.

Oh! My apologies Herny-San for the mixup.  Thanks for the clarification! Much appreciated!

It's nice, but I don't think it really matters.

Would I have liked the option to buy a PS4 with an Emotion Engine and a Cell Processor added into it for PS2/3 emulation, even if it cost $300 more?

Oh my god, yes.

Am I going to go buy an XB1 just because I can play some of XB360's library? No, I'd just buy an XB360 for that. The thing about backwards compatibility is that it is ALWAYS extra. IT's never a necessary part of a machine, otherwise the manufacturer would just release more of those old consoles. That aside, I found the XB1's backwards compatibility especially redundant, since they have HDMI in, anyway. Plug the 360 into it and release new updates to make it run more smoothly and with the XB360 controller. Congratulations, 100% "bc".

I am just enjoying the fact that... That I was right before/after these machines launched.
Backwards compatibility via emulation was possible on these new consoles. (Eat that naysayers!)

Hopefully Sony follows suit, but they don't have the software building expertise that Microsoft does... But I will assume they would rather push their paid alternative.
