Forums - Nintendo - How would you feel if the next Nintendo console used flash memory cards?

personally i want hybrid storage read write capable flash cart thing.

read = release game
write = patches and dlc

this will eliminate the need for hdds, hell a 1TB on PS4 is not enough since we installing the game data.
the need to worry about backing up everytime you install a patch,
when gen ends and services are shutdown all the dlc and patches are on the cart and can be used on any console even if original one fails.

^ this so much this.

Also not only are you saveing on the no bluray drive & royalties, but also saveing on HDD costs for your console.

Cheap console that just does 1 thing, play games.

To bad they didnt go this route though, patent they filed shows a internal HDD.

*edit: I wonder if just haveing a SD card slot, would be enough to survive without a HDD shipped in a console?

couldnt you just inform people they need a SD card with free space on it, if they want to install a digital game?

It wont, the patent application clearly shows they intend to use only memory cards and external hard drive support.
The lack of optical drive and Nintendos recent moves towards mobile suggests to me that itll end up being an android based home console with downloadable only titles.

Name me one dedicated gaming device that was digital only that even sniffed success. It's never happened and for good reason.

There was poll recently conducted where it showed that 78% of core gamers prefer physical media. That number is not going to change any time soon and I'm positive Nintendo and everyone else knows this. It would be suicide, plain and simple.

A digital only dedicated gaming device needs to release first before it can be successful. Isn't PSP Go the only one to ever try it?

A single poll among "core gamers" (a stupid made up term) should deter Nintendo from following the rest of the entertainment industry.

(on other hand, without a HDD, how do you manage digital downloaded games? without a HDD there couldnt be any digital downloaded games)

external hdd support for digital games. That way you don't need to keep upgrading the system storage like n the PS4 when you fill up the drive.

ATM I got some WIi U games playing of my external works great. Only reason I got them was cause it was free haha.

It would be stupid and prematurely kill third party support because of how expensive they'd be compared to the competition using disks. No sane developer would support it. So I'd be pissed. But there's no chance in hell that's happening, so all is well.

What if you brought your memory stick into GameStop, Walmart etc and they loaded the game onto it for you...I.e its digital but also available at the store.

I am 100% positive that they're not STUPID enough to release a console that only 22% of core gamers would want to own. If this were a bet, you'd have some pretty long odds lol.

So dispite the fact that this is Nintendo's own patent, you're 100% positive that they files this parent just for fun, right

I can't really see Nintendo going 100% digital in any case.

I would love it!

This will eliminate the need for hdds, faster loading times, smaller consoles (and less pieces usually mean cheaper prices), less heat, possibilities to become a handheld if needed...and what most important no need for optical drive, thats thing is only thing that broke on some GC and Wii consoles.

Basicly, Nintendo console whitout optical drive and HDD could be work whitout any without a hitch very very long, like SNES or N64. :)

Having an internal HDD shipped with the system is far more consumer friendly as well as a general expectation. If the systems comes with no memory, I garuntee lots of people will complain, attaching an external usb HDD is also not a ideal solution for most consumers either, I think only a small minority of core gamers actually do that. If its a very Nintendo centric box with no real intention of receiving third party support, 64GB of built-in Internal memory may be decent however they won't be doing much of a favour with their collaborators like Square Enix seeing as Dragon Quest XI will likely be 40GB minimum.

I can easily see Nintendo shipping 64GB internal and console itself have support for almost every external HDD or USB Flash.

If Nintendo are prepared to cover the cost for the medium, then I say go for it. It can reduce size and cost for the system and be a better transition towards digital-only. It´s time for the video game industry to adjust towards a digital market and someone of the big three needs to take the first step.

A 32GB rewritable card in mass bulk is about $1-$2 at a volume order of about 1000 or so.

Nintendo would be ordering in the millions. They would get an even lower price than that.

So I don't think cost is really a big deal.

If they are going digital only it's more likely to do with higher profit margins from digital sales vs. retail.

Nintendo makes probably $15 more per digital copy sale versus retail where they have retailers have to get a cut, and then you physical manufacturing costs, packaging costs, and shipping costs.
