Forums - Sony - Sony's Dream of really taking the " living room" gaming experience anywhere, anyplace anytime is now in reach

Many may Question, Sony's reasoning of still trying to accomplish this Goal after Playstation Vita has failed to take off.

Well this is not about going to try to mimic a living room game console Experience on the Go, it really is a living room game console experience on the go.

Is now well within reach!

Exhibit A:

sony showing off the Laser Pico projector working with the PS4 , many thought it was just a peripheral for the PS4, and that was not the case. What it was showing is now , there is a true HD pico projector option for smart device technology that being able to take the living room entertainment experience anywhere, anyplace, anytime is now a reality.

Many would ask what about HD TV option also?

Well Sony again is moving an option for such functionality into any smartphone manufacturer like for this laser HD pico projection technology they are making it available to any manufacturer that would like to included into a phone, tablet etc.

Other such companies are looking to offer the HD laser pico projection technology into smartphones that they produce also.

Exhibit B:

The result

Is being able to now take not only a living room HD game console experience on the road any where you go, but with playstation Vue, HBONow, Netflicks, etc

Your living Room Cable as well as over the Air Broadcast HD TV  can now go anywhere , anyplace ,anytime.

All can be ran on a mobile battery power to boot!

The other such option about how to get games to the end user on a streaming model, was a priority no doubt, one of which Gaikai seemed to be the Answer Sony was looking for.

Do you think this  was worth the investment by Sony or do you think its not a good investment for Sony or PlayStation?

Ehh. Too early to tell if it's a good investment. Usually when Sony does stuff like this (Vita TV, 3D, Vita/Ps4 play) they are good ideas on paper but fail when put out commercially.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

Quite right, but just like Sony's CMOS business, that sell to other companies, that's also what they are doing in this case also!

A smartphone mobile HDTv tuner may not seem that important, but to companies in the telecommunications business, I'm pretty sure they are quite interested in lowing the amount of bandwidth consumers are using for streaming TV or video across their network. This of course could in effect lower video streaming requirements across their telecom network by end users to a smaller reliant number.

It's a niche product. You need to sit in almost total darkness to get a decent size picture, otherwise you might as well watch on your phone screen which has a higher resolution too. Plus it's not a living room experience without dedicated 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound :)
It will sell as a cool gimmick, something to show off at parties, fun on camping trips.

Actually you do not have to sit in near total darkness, remember this is not a bulb DLP type pico projector its a laser projector that outputs real high Lumen's for being a laser projector its contrast ration is 80,000:1, and unlike Bulb, be that your 1 meter from the wall or 12 feet, the picture resolution from 43" to 120" is the same! Again its not a DLP bulb its a laser.

As for being a niche, that may or may not happen because this is being sold to multiple vendors, and its not just for Sony only handsets! Just like the HDTV tuner module and just like the CMOS sensors.

And as for surround sound, you can hook up a bluetooth portable speaker system that has multi spread speaker satalites..yes they are max 30 feet from your phone, but again it is still pretty portables even doing that.

Aren't there several small projectors available these days? If you want to do this for whatever reason, it's not like it hasn't been possible for a while now.

I don't really get the point of having a "semi-portable" console in your house. I have zero urge to pick up the big, heavy PS4 and carry it around my house just so I can project an image in the ... kitchen? Some other bedroom? What's the point? I have a nice TV with a nice comfy couch like 99% of people in my living room. No desire to go elsewhere in my home to play. Wii U kinda has the same issue, it's a solution to a problem that no one was asking for.

It's not 1955 anymore, if someone wants to watch a TV show which someone else wants to play a video game or watch the basketball game, most households have 2, actually more like 3+ TV sets.

Those are SD DLP, bulb, they are not HD and they are not Laser. And this would be more about you go on a trip you would be able to have everything pretty much in one device.

And I'n some house holds there is or may be plenty of TV's, but in some place's they may not have more than one TV, this gives you the ability of having a 43" to 120" HD TV included into a smartphone for a low price of if you had to buy them separate. Its like adding an FM radio chip to smartphones. It may not be common now but for later on, people that go camping, or who may need a projector at work this also would include TV function as well.

Its like you would not have to use this projector functionality unless you need them, but for a business meetings having a HD pico projector right in you phone would be quite useful. Added TV and other benefits would just be a bonus.

Also it could project a virtual keyboard and mouse on the table by position of the laser down instead of to a wall, so you could use it instead of a projected screen to that of a slide mouse &keyboard combo on the surface of a table!

It has my attention but I don't see myself actually taking advantage of it. At first, I was excited but will I really ever move my consoles from their shelves in my entertainment center? Do I really need such a big viewing area for my personal mobile devices?

That makes no sense. Yes the resolution is the same, but the inverse square law applies the same to laser or bulb light output. 43" to 120" dims the screen by a factor 7.8

It's not bad on a white wall with bright content

That's the exact same tech as Sony is licensing for their laser projector (comes from MicroVision)

Or some actual content in the dark on a projector screen

Here's a review

Brightness and Image Quality
Celluon rates the PicoPro at 32 lumens, and I measured it at 29. According to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), 30 lumens is bright enough for extended viewing for a 21- to 29-inch (diagonal) image in theater-dark lighting, assuming a 1.0 gain screen and a 16:9 aspect ratio. For moderate ambient light, it's bright enough for a 14- to 15-inch (diagonal) image.

It looks like a cool gadget, yet would you pay $300 more to have it in your phone?
Maybe in a windows 10 phone, streaming direct from the xbox one to your bedroom, projecting on the ceiling.
