Actually you do not have to sit in near total darkness, remember this is not a bulb DLP type pico projector its a laser projector that outputs real high Lumen's for being a laser projector its contrast ration is 80,000:1, and unlike Bulb, be that your 1 meter from the wall or 12 feet, the picture resolution from 43" to 120" is the same! Again its not a DLP bulb its a laser.
As for being a niche, that may or may not happen because this is being sold to multiple vendors, and its not just for Sony only handsets! Just like the HDTV tuner module and just like the CMOS sensors.
And as for surround sound, you can hook up a bluetooth portable speaker system that has multi spread speaker satalites..yes they are max 30 feet from your phone, but again it is still pretty portables even doing that.
