Forums - Nintendo - Splatoon is a very serious contender for my game of generation so far

Not in my book, the fact that splatoon is not universally accepted by at least 90% of reviewers is not game of the generation material. Games adored by the vast majority like bayonetta 2, smash bros wii u, and blood borne are way better contestants for game of the generation, and even they fall short of previous contenders such as uncharted 2, mario galaxy, ocarina of time, gta v, metroid prime, etc.

We all know that huge impact on reviewers had initial lack of content, 2 months after release we have double of that content.

Did they fix the local multiplayer options, or customizable lobbies/games, or voice chat? Honestly splatoon just has too many problems as of now to even be a contender for gotg. It takes one step forward with artwork, but takes 2 steps back by not matching the standards set in other fps games.

Smash, bayonetta, and blood borne are all great contenders in their respective genre, matching and surpassing previous standards set before them.

Voice chat is near useless in Splatoon because the game is driven by more individual action all it'd be used for would be people throwing abuse at their team mates, lobbies were added in the new patch. The game hasn't got much problems to begin with tbh, the are no standards for Splatoon to match because it's created it's own sub section in the shooting genre much like Mario Kart to racers, the's no other shooter currently like it but the will be in future that's more then enough to warrant being a GOTG contender as its approach has opened up the shooting genre to people who normally don't like shooters.

-Majority online multiplayer games doesn't have at all local multiplayer option, so I dont see this like problem beacuse this game with focus on online play.

-Yes they fixed customizable lobbies/games.

-About Voice chat, no and they probably will not realise that option.

Even with some problems (but every game have some problem), for me is a very serious contender for game of generation so far, almost all aspect of game very good and I really don't care about things like voice chat at all.

Smash is again Smash but better than previous 4 Smash games, Bayonetta 2 is better sequel to Bayonetta, Bloodborne is very similar game to Dark Souls games just with different setting. But Splatoon, is so fresh, unique, innovative and offers such a different experience and fun that I can't compared to any other game. And thats why Splatoon is very serious contender for game of generation so far for me.

Simply put, this game offers such a different experience and fun that I can't compared to any other game.

1) For me

2) I cant

It is his opinion people. He might as well say that Sonic Boom is his GOTG and it would still be his opinion.

Well, I haven't played Splatoon, nor have I played many other games that people claim are great, but I still think that it's way too early to talk about GOTG, regardless of platform or subjective opinions.
The PS4 and One have only been out around 20-21 months and even the Wii U is still not three years old, there is likely to be dozens of great games that could contend for GOTG.

All that aside though; I find it odd that OP and many others are saying that you don't have a right to say that Splatoon isn't worthy unless you've played it yourself, and then go on to disregard other titles they themselves haven't played. I also always enjoy the "if you're not on board with my choices, you must have poor taste" that has persisted on this site for nearly a decade now (that goes for everyone).

In short; this thread seems weird at best, I don't understand its point at all, to be honest. Personally, I think my GOTG hasn't released yet.
How about we have this topic again when the generation is actually over, or at least very nearly so?

I think OP made things very clear.

For me this game is so good (so fresh, unique, innovative, very fun and addictive game that offers such a different experience and fun that I can't compared to any other game), that I personally consider it for very serious contender for game of generation so far, and I just wanted to know does people that played Splatoon have similar thoughts.

And I think it should be just as clear that others would contest that opinion with one of their own, regardless of whether nor not they played the game (or those who played it and simply don't agree and make other suggestions for GOTG).

I don't mind your opinion, not even in the slightest, I just find it strange that one would use the exact same criteria to shoot down other suggestions that others use against one's own arguments and choices.

Like I said; I don't think my personal GOTG has been released yet, overall this has been a very underwhelming generation for me so far, especially on consoles and for AAA titles.

He said it's his candidate for GOTG, not that it is his GOTG.

Splatoon is the best Wii U game I've played, so for now it is indeed my GOTG.

Have you played any games on other platforms?

For me, console games in the 8th gen have been truly uninteresting so far, besides Mario Kart I can't really think of a single must-have console title thus far in the generation (that isn't also on PC, that is). I know there a few incoming games that I will likely consider must-have, but so far it has been paltry.

Yeah, my nephew has a PS4.

Anyway, I only have a problem with the people who think a GOTY or GOTG can only be a violent open world game.

Thread title edited to better reflect the content.

Yeah, having a preset requirement for GOTY or GOTG sort of defeats the purpose and would lead nominating titles out of determined bias rather than real impact and actual objective quality.

The best game I've played so far this gen is without a doubt The Witcher 3 though, it's actually one of the best games I ever played, which is saying something. But there are a lot open world games with huge problems (most of them, actually).
