Forums - Sony Discussion - Will PS4 have a price cut this year?

What do you think will happen?

$100 price cut 30 11.19%

$50 price cut 93 34.70%

Bundles 145 54.10%

Total:268

No, there won't be a price-cut this year.

I used to think they would implement a 16nm PS4 slim for $300 this fall, but idk if they will anymore. 16nm is WAY behind and as long as Sony is meeting demand well they just don't have a need to.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

Yep that probably isnt happending until late 1st half of 2016.

The 16nm FinFETs will cut power consumption by more than 50%....  should allow them to make a quiet tiny slim model.

The "they don't need to cut the price" argument makes no sense. The PS2 was far more dominant than the PS4, yet it received a price cut 19 months after launch (except Japan where it got one 15 months after launch).

I think the PS4 will get a $100 price cut this year for two reasons:

1) Except for the Wii, no major console released since the 16-bit era has gone more than two years without a price cut.

2) Except for the 360, no major console that launched at $300 or more received less than a $100 drop for its first price cut.

I like to read your posts, because you are very knowledgable about sales. But I think that this generation cannot be judged based on previous generation patterns.

Today, people have become used to paying a premium for their technology/entertainment. In 2001 or even 2008, consoles had to cut prices to bring in new customers, because $300-400 was perceived an expensive investment. But today, when we have people willing to pay $300-400 (or more) every year or every other year for a new phone, tablet and similar, the idea of paying $400 for a console that will last you 7-8 years is not that preposterous.

There is no pressure to cut prices because people are used to paying even more than this. They will have a price drop when they see a drop in demand, and not because history dictates it.

You see I mostly agree with you, but the thing is the PS2 needed to cut its price in order to compete with new consoles.  One of them was launched cheaper and stronger, and the other one was like 50% stronger and the same price.  Of course they dropped the price!

But right now the fact is the PS4's only competition is about half as strong and selling not even 20% cheaper.  At the very least I think Sony is waiting for the X1 to be $300 or for sales to slow down (Which they are not).

They allready have cheaper models which cost less to produce

I think it would be stupid not to cut the price.

Microsoft rolling out the big guns with Halo and Tomb raider vs Sony basically having nothing.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

A price cut really isn't necessary at this point. I think Sony is just going to do bundles because they still are having amazing sales with no price cut.

Wii U NNID:  CWegzz
3DS Friend Code:  4210-5277-5484
PSN:  Ronnoc4
Steam:  CWegz

Does Wony want to seal this generation? If yes, price cut.

why give it a price cut when PS4 is still selling like hot cakes? Bundles will happen.
