Forums - Microsoft Discussion - I really wish Microsoft invested into Phantom Dust or a new game rather than Rise of the Tomb Raider.

MS have no talent to make they own game period so they paid huge sum of $$$$ to get other game exclusive
(that show how they afraid of the competitor)

The problem is not talent! Their problem is,they just don't trust their "smaller" IPs as "profitable enough" franchises.

- Killer instinct was not released as a AAA $60 retail game, but as a "try pls see if you like it and then buy in pieces" 'cause they didn't trust the game would be a sucess as a 60$ game.

- Banjo kazooei nuts and bolts deviates completely from the platformer it was suposse to be because they didn't believe there was a market for it(they even joke with this in the fucking game)

- Instead of making a proper remake of conkers or a sequel, they just gave people some packs of assets on project sparks so people could literally make the game by themselves because, guess what, they don't believe there is a market big enough for this.

- Phatom dust reboot was an outsorced, really tight budget,single-playerless project that MS dropped the moment they saw they would have to actually put some money in the project, because AGAIN they don't belive it would reach whatever was their goal.

- And at last, phil hyped the shit up about a new proper rare game even by teasing people with battletoads t-shirt.Then,they announced a collection of old the games and a new MMO.What about battletoads teaser you may ask? it was a shovel knight dlc...

Sunset overdrive, Quantum break, Scale bound, Recore? They sure do seem to believe in a lot of their new IPs to make physical releases....

Funny because you just give 4 games that are not from their studios and the post you quote talk about games made by Microsoft first party Studios, he talks about the trust in their own studios to make new IP, they dont trust them so they pay other studios to do them ( which can be fine, but both are better like i said, especially when they dont own the IP like Sunset Overdrive, who knows if it will stay exclusive or if the sequel will be exclusive if there is one )

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

They are getting better at making new IPs. Why complain about studios making games like Gears, Forza, Halo etc? They're great games.
Maybe we should direct this critique at Nintendo for a change? They're the ones that really deserve it.

Why didn't they purchase Eidos when it was available for buying and end of story. To me as a PlayStation player it would have been a disgrace, but at least in terms of business it would have made much more sense. Sure much more than this deal, where SE can end up losing a lot of money (well, it depends on how much MS paid. If it was $10 million as I've read it was peanuts).

Yeah they are garbage, it's why PS4 is 23.8 and MS is 13 million....Same rehashed gears , halo forza, and bad busienss practices...Sad thing is TR will get stomped this holiday...what a terrible waste of money. No one is buying an xox over Tomb raider.

Created a new account to write this? You won't last l............. oh you're already banned :)

It's beyond me why people have to stoop so low just to get attention

They wasted their money imo.

What's with all the arguing about who is making more new IPs? Sony entrust their big studios to make new IPs while MS doesn't (Evolutuon - DC, Naughty Dog - TLOU, GG - Horizon, Media Molcule- Dreams, Santa Monica - Unannounced new IP). But MS invest in new IPs in different ways like funding 3rd party projects and some smaller AA titles.

Also MS might of bought TROTR exclusivity but Sony also spent money to get Street Fighter exclusive. They invest in 3rd party exclusives to benefit them so in the long run, the money spent on the exclusives will bring them in money (money for being publishers and extra money and bigger install base from the extra consoles sold because of them).

So to answer the OP, MS do not look at the Tomb Raider as throwing money away but to benefit them so it shouldn't affect if they should fund in Phantom Dust or not. MS would of looked at how much PD would sell and how much it would sell for, from that they can work out its budget. The studio needed more money to make the game work so MS pulled the plug. Harsh but a smart move from MS. Not sure if PD will ever be made because I can't see MS wanting to pump more money into restarting the project.

Their first party might suck but they're doing a decent job with 2nd and 3rd party this gen, so give them a break for now. Bring this up again if they start to tail off in a few years

Sunset Overdrive, Scalebound and Recore are all second or third party, aren't they? So just bought exclusivities, but not "MS new IPs"? Microsoft still doesn't have enough internal studios, and the internal studios they have seem always stuck on the same IPs (or, for Rare, bad games compared to what they were doing before being bought).

The thing is, and I believe that is what the OP is trying to say, that at this point it seems very questionable if MS is going to benefit from this timed exclusive in any meaningful way. Also it seems unclear how, if at all, Xbox players benefit from this deal, sure there is all this PR talk about MS "definitely helping to make this the best game possible" but there's nothing tangible here outside of being able to play it sooner than other platforms.

To use the Street Fighter example, what that game does for Sony seems a lot clearer. First, even if this website doesn't exactly feel that way, real world interest in SFV is currently a lot higher than in RoTR, the game also releases at a much less unfortunate time and will, unless something goes horribly wrong, be the premier fighting game at tournaments for years to come, so it will also be relevant for all that time, finally it of course is not coming to other consoles for its entire lifecycle. And also the benefit for players seems a lot more tangible, even ignoring the whole Capcom wouldn't have been able to make SFV alone aspect since that would only start arguments, for instance the player pool will for the first time not be split up and for pro players Sony has exponentially risen the prize pool in the Capcom cup to $500k. There's also the new DLC method, but I don't want to give Sony too much/Capcom too little credit here, that may have been Capcoms own idea.
