Forums - Gaming - What happened to console gaming?

So i received my copy of GTA V for PS4 today and put the disc in about 8 hours ago. It showed a bar while installing snd there was an update that needed to be installed. 8 hours later the update still hasn't finished downloading but worse, since starting the game i have been looking at the loading screen saying "installing" for about 15 minutes now. It's now at about 25%.

Seriously what happened? Since when did console gaming become exactly the same as PC gaming? Same thing with Arkham Knight. I was trown back to the main menu for about 15 minutes because the game hade to install and there was a day one patch. A day one patch for a console game? Have developers got lazy or something? What happened to the day you could just put in a game and start gaming right away, and you got a finished product day one? Seriously what is going on?

I'm sorry i'm not trying to rand or something but this just pisses me off completely. This is not what i bought a PS4 for.

Console gaming became more complicated due to much bigger games. I guess we can now follow the expression "Good things come to those who wait.'

Completely agree. I want console gaming to be: Start console - start game - game starts. Today everything takes ages to begin and consoles are way too complicated.

What happened? Games got far, far more complicated. That's basically what happened. The difference in manpower is astronomical. Has absolutely nothing to do with being "lazy"--I honestly don't even understand that line of thought, as many developers nearly kill themselves to stay on schedule.

Schedules are, of course, the other part of the problem, as publishers would probably prefer a few deaths than having a game miss deadlines and thus throw off their carefully researched release schedules. They'll gladly release something that needs a massive day one patch rather than have to spend thousands sending out new promotional materials or, worse yet, missing the all important holiday release window.

The thing is, if you get a game on day 1, normally that is what will happen.

However, if you get a game 3+ months after it releases, it is bound to have some updates. They all stack up.

Yeah, I know. It's a bit ridiculous waiting for the updates sometimes. I miss the "plug and play" days sometimes.

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

This is why handhelds are still supreme.

I kid, I kid.

That's exactly why I'm buying a PC, why buy a console that works like a PC when I can buy the real deal instead? Also, the Wii U is the only console that still works like a more traditional console.

Consoles modernized. The games you're enjoying right now wouldn't exist in playable forms without installs and updates. Get over it.

if you got a wii u you wouldnt have this problem.
its true that you wouldnt be able to play GTA V, but if those are the kinds of games you are really wanting to play, unfortunately these are the kinds of things you are going to have to deal with. im very sorry about that, i completely hate that aspect about the ps4 and x1 as well.
