What happened? Games got far, far more complicated. That's basically what happened. The difference in manpower is astronomical. Has absolutely nothing to do with being "lazy"--I honestly don't even understand that line of thought, as many developers nearly kill themselves to stay on schedule.
Schedules are, of course, the other part of the problem, as publishers would probably prefer a few deaths than having a game miss deadlines and thus throw off their carefully researched release schedules. They'll gladly release something that needs a massive day one patch rather than have to spend thousands sending out new promotional materials or, worse yet, missing the all important holiday release window.
