Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo takes down browser based emulator for Game Boy games

Many gaming fans love to play old console games in browser emulations, but Nintendo is less amused by these fan-made recreations. This week the company took down a popular JavaScript-powered Game Boy Advance emulator with dozens of pre-loaded games, claiming several copyright infringements.

This week the company took down a popular Game Boy Advance emulator that was hosted on the developer platform GitHub.

Nintendo requested to stop public access for to the web site in question by a takedown notice submitted to GitHub:

https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2015-07-06-nintendo.md

which led to its prompt shutting down and the user account being removed by it's owner.

In the takedown notice Nintendo writes:

“This web site provides access to unauthorized copies of Nintendo’s copyright-protected video games and videos making use of Nintendo’s copyrighted Pokémon characters and imagery in violation of Nintendo’s exclusive rights.”

Games available through the browser emulation included: Advance Wars, Dragon Ball Z, Super Mario Advance, Pokemon Emerald and The Sims 2.

Nintendo previously took similar action with againt another Game Boy emulator by iOS app GBA4iOS.

Nintendo doesn't allow messing around with their IPs.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

If you own the rights to something, you own the rights to something. If they don't want their IP to be handled this way, it's their right and I have no problem with it.

I know I personally would like to have the final say with regards to my own property.

"pre-loaded games"

Well that's the problem. They cannot take down emulators unless it comes with a bios image. Providing game data to download though is illegal no matter what way you put it.

you can buy all those games. sure i use emulators too, but just for games i cant buy anymore.

Everything seems reasonable

Seems about right. The people behind the emulator should consider themselves lucky if there's no further consequences to this.

Not surprising, it's not the first time they will do it, and it's definitely not the last either
