Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will there ever again be a year as jam-packed as 2001?

In 2014, the highest-rated game of the year (not including rereleases or American releases that came out a different year from the Japanese release) according to Metacritic was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with a score of 92. However, there were 15 games that reached that number in 2001, with the same criteria:

  1. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (PS2) - 97
  2. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2) - 97
  3. Halo: Combat Evolved (XB) - 97
  4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2) - 96
  5. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2) - 95
  6. Devil May Cry (PS2) - 94
  7. Madden NFL 2002 (PS2) - 94
  8. Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA) - 93
  9. NBA 2K2 (DC) - 93
  10. NHL 2002 (PS2) - 92
  11. SSX Tricky (PS2) - 92
  12. Advance Wars (GBA) - 92
  13. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC) - 92
  14. Final Fantasy X (PS2) - 92
  15. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) - 92
So, will this year, or any year, ever be able to manage this?

Part of it is how many different systems were on the market. Dreamcast, gamecube, xbox, ps2, game boy adavance even the N64 squeezed out 1 last great game. It was also the year the PS2 actually started living up to their potential game wise cranking out some must have titles just in time to stand up to their competitors.

halo 2

Crusader kings

warhammer 40k dawn of war

Dang, 2001 was a great year.

I don't think we'll ever have another great year like that.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Unless Naughty Dog make 15 games in one year this probably isn't going to happen.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

Yes there will be, scores aren't everything since it's been getting harder over the years to gain a critics approval ...

In terms of impact I think next year will be just as big as 2001 if not even bigger!

Zelda
Uncharted 4
Gran Turismo 7
Tom Clancy's The Division (I'm expecting this to be a big hit.)
Street Fighter V
Gears of War 4
Star Citizen
Doom 4 (Maybe this will be a hit.)
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (I'm most excited for this one.)
Dishonored 2 (The last game was big so why not ...)
Mirror's Edge Catalyst
Final Fantasy XV (This should definitely be coming out next year I think.)
Quantum Break (Not too sure about this one ...)

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Good but 2001 was still better

Damn sports games were ridiculously overrated back then.

We can have another year like that if Rare could stop being shitty for one year and make goddamn conkers other bad fur day!

Best year to be a gamer, in my opinion. 1998 was great, too.
