Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will there ever again be a year as jam-packed as 2001?

In 2014, the highest-rated game of the year (not including rereleases or American releases that came out a different year from the Japanese release) according to Metacritic was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with a score of 92. However, there were 15 games that reached that number in 2001, with the same criteria:

  1. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (PS2) - 97
  2. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2) - 97
  3. Halo: Combat Evolved (XB) - 97
  4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2) - 96
  5. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2) - 95
  6. Devil May Cry (PS2) - 94
  7. Madden NFL 2002 (PS2) - 94
  8. Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA) - 93
  9. NBA 2K2 (DC) - 93
  10. NHL 2002 (PS2) - 92
  11. SSX Tricky (PS2) - 92
  12. Advance Wars (GBA) - 92
  13. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC) - 92
  14. Final Fantasy X (PS2) - 92
  15. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) - 92
So, will this year, or any year, ever be able to manage this?

Great year. That PS2

Well it was a lot easier to hit a 90+ back then, that's certain.

I personally dont think thats a strong list of games, even if the rateings are high.
Yes there will be much better years than 2001.

Yeah, there was definitely a sports game craze going on back then.

No, I don't think we'll ever have a year like 2001 again.

I agree. Personally, from that list, I only loved 4 games.

For me, Final Fantasy X is my favourite game of all-time, Super Smash Bros. Melee is #2, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is #10.

This was when sports games didn't suck. They acctually put work into the games instead of just releasing the same game with updated rosters.
