If they can release in 2016, the question is why - why will it be that easy to port games to it.  Is it essentially an upgraded Wii U?

I would get that- Nintendo needs a do-over on branding and needs to re-launch without a GamePad.  But if the device plays Wii U games and supports the GamePad we already own optionally - then it could be a platform to continue Mario Kart 8 sales - surely they aren't happy with 5 million.

On the other hand, if this thing sells 20 million - that's great for Nintendo but lets not pretend that the Wii U and 3DS aren't dead- all attention goes to the NX at that point.

If it plays my Wii U titles, I'll jump on the bandwagon, if not - I'd be hard pressed to not switch to a PS4.

It not simple upgrade of Wii U, Nintendo said that is "platform with a brand new concept" and "we're always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person's video gaming life".

Maybe its handheld/home hybrid, I expect to have Wii U backward compatibility.

Wii U rebranding and re-launch in this faze would not changing anything, Nintendo would just through money in process doing that.

Iwata:

"Regarding your concern about what will happen to Wii U or what will happen to Nintendo 3DS, NX is a new platform, so the installed base will have to be built up from zero. When NX is launched, there already will be a certain volume of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U hardware widely existing in the market, so from a software business perspective, it would be highly inefficient to stop releasing titles for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U right after the launch of NX. Therefore, while we are preparing NX for the future, we are discussing within our internal development teams as well as with the second-party developers we co-develop software with and also with third-party software publishers about how to continue creating software for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. So, I believe that your point of concern should not happen immediately. As for Wii U, we will continue to make efforts, as it is a priority within the company to think about how we can satisfy the consumers who purchased this system to the maximum extent possible."

Not that I believe this will happen, because Nintendo never supports their software of past systems after launching new ones, but if he's telling the truth, that basically confirms BC for me.

They will support Wii U and 3DS games after the NX launches bacause the NX will absorb the eshops of both meaning that new Wii U and 3DS games will technically also be new NX games.

Most people don't buy their systems only for exclusives... if they do, there seems to be something wrong with the hardware if it's only a secondary system and most multiplatform games are bought for the other system. Especially Xbox-gamers had no software droughts in the short lifespan of Microsofts first console thanks to enormous third-party-support.

Just a small comparison how many great games Wii U should get in the rest of its lifetime to be on par with GC, GBA or Xbox:

2016 seems a year too early. Is this source reliable at all? I'm a little confused by your title saying it will release in 2016 but you yourself pointing out it will merely be revealed in 2016 heh

20 million first year would certainly suggest handheld.

NX is a handheld/home platform, not just a handheld or home console alone.
