Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is a Holocaust game too far?

Ok, I am going to take a different stance on this...

No, I don't think Nintendo should allow this. Why?

Because people will bitch, and it is Nintendo's tradition not to be the first to do something that will make people bitch. There a company and there job is to make money. This game will not make them any money.

Secondly, the developer should release it on PC. Free market capitalism and all that. (It will still sell bad).

Lastly, Holocaust survivors and historians should make a huge deal out of this (nothing) to get attendance up at Holocaust museums.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

what set this (hol) apart was the fact that there was a global war that delt with it

Not to be a jerk about it all, but there was a war fought over your ancestors as well, you guys just lost. And there was not a war fought over the holocaust. No nation attacked Germany. Ever country that was at war with Germany was either first attacked by them, or war was declared by Germany. The only reason we went to war, was because the Japanese attacked us, and then a few days later Germany declared was on the US. We had no plans to entering the war, especially not over ethnic cleansing.

I hate how the media sticks Nintendo's name all over the game simply because it's on their platform.

Also, we can play a MILLION games about shooting Nazis or shooting Americans as Nazis. But bring up the Holocaust in a serious, educational manner, and OH TEH NOES.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Now, I do acknowledge that games can be pretty educative, but I honestly think this is too far. Games are meant to be enjoyed, and to think someone is going to make a game out of a man's horrifying experience to be enjoyed by the rest of the world is sickening.

What's next, a rape simulator to educate people why rape is wrong? Get real.

Are you joking? Movies deal with serious situations all the time. There is nothing wrong with a game showing the horrors of the Holocaust in a serious and educational manner.

People need to get their head out of their ass and realize that games can extend beyond the world of Mario and become a legitimate art form in their own right. This kind of thinking pisses me off.

Don't get me wrong on this. I'm not against the fact that a game can be as serious and informative as a video documentary on something horrible, the only difference is the medium it's delivered in. But the fact of the matter is that this Luc Bernard guy is making an game about an atrocity that is "enjoyable to play."

Now, a lot of people seem to be having some sort of bias against the Holocaust survivor because he's "old." Not all old people are codgers. I have great sympathy for the man. The reason I'm against this game is simply because they are making some sort of game out of his experience.

Put yourselves into his shoes. He went through a horrible ordeal, maybe a lot of his family and friends were slaughtered by Nazis, and he probably had to deal with life afterwards with nothing but the rags he was wearing. Years later you got some dick who never experienced the Holocaust making an game out of it that's "enjoyable to play."

This game isn't simply something that's supposed to be informative, it's a game. I really advocate video games that educate people as much as anyone else, but I'd honestly tone the interaction down and remove the "enjoyable to play" part. I seriously hope this game is more of a trivia type of game.

You can't base your art on whether someone somewhere might be offended. Almost anything worth playing/watching/doing is going to insult someone.

I lost two family members to idiotic street racers but you don't see me hollering about movies like The Fast and the Furious, other than me complaining how juvenile Hollywood crap like that is. Horrible shit happens. We all know that. But trying to ignore it or dance around difficult subject matter is even worse IMO. Take the subject head-on and let people do what they please with it. We're adults here - well, most of us anyway - and whether we do or do not give this guy money for his creation is our own personal choice.

There are things you can and can't do based on someone getting offended, and the right to do either is completely reserved when it comes to art--I know. I'm questioning this guy's merits. That Holocaust survivor was forced into a situation he had no control over, and they are making game that's more than just informative. It's really immature in his part, and that's why I compared it to making a "rape simulator to educate people that rape is wrong." It's just retarded beyond recognition.

Native American's don't have to stay on reservations. They just don't because on said reservations they have the same rights a state does and can rule themselves to a large degree.

The only current agruement is the federal government doesn't want to give them full rights, knowing that if the indian tribes broke away the living conditions on reservations would be even lower then they currently are in some places. They would also lose a lot of benefits Native Americans get at being US citizens. Which is why the government would perfer assimilation to make Native Americans a part of the USA as everyone else.

To say it's never been dealt with is an understatement. The only difference is the USA gave Native American's part of their land, instead of taking land from someone else to give them.

Either way I think the government should just let reservations break away and become foreign countries.  Allowing anyone who wants to "stay" in the US the ability to move.

I don't think it's appropriate gaming material. Just as a game about 9/11 wouldn't be appropriate. Also, I don't think a game about crucifying Jesus would work either. It would just stir up too many emotions.

Yup, never trust old people. They'll turn into zombies before long.
