Depends how you interpret "Throughout Horizon, you’ll be leveling up Aloy, crafting new items with the various materials you scavenge across the world, and visiting a King’s Landing-looking city that seems to be a safe haven from the machines that roam the wild. "

If that's a separate entry in that list it would seem to indicate that you'll earn experience and then level up her base stats.  If they mean that crafting new items is how you level up Aloy then I agree it's an action game similar to Monster Hunter.

I assume they meant in the terms of Monster Hunterish, but even if it has more RPG elements, I still feel it will be best described as action game, and not Action RPG. For me it takes a bit more than leveling system alone to RPG, namely when RPG elements exist in so many genres now.

Agree to disagree, to me if you can level up the character's base stats (meaning strength instead of just "increased damage" or vitality instead of "increased health") based on experience gained through battle I gotta call it an RPG.

Well I just consider that a key element, I think the problem is Destiny, and it caused me reevaluate what it means to call something a rpg game. I consider that more of a shooter with RPG elements, not RPG Shooter.  One could easily argue that it is RPG Shooter, but to me it doesn't really fit it. Given a lot of genres aren't just one thing anymore.

However I do need ask why does it becomes different when you do it with armor?

This just sounds absolutely perfect in every way. @_@

This absolutely stole the Best Western Thing at E3 award by miles... Only surpassed by some of what Square Enix's Japanese stuff (KHIII, FFVII Remake, Nier 2, etc.).

Man, I could not be more excited to see the massive potential of Guerilla Games fully realised in such a fascinating game that is so directly up my alley. I'm hoping for a fantastic collector's edition to pre-order!

Ahh so just an action game it is. I will get it.

You didn't even read the title lol.

"Throughout Horizon, you’ll be leveling up Aloy, crafting new items with the various materials you scavenge across the world"

Actually thats the part which made me make that statement. I usually ignore titles and read content. Regardless I want it, just because it doesn't fit my narrow defination meants nothing really.

Add: I think I should clarify what I took it as, I took it as crafting system with level system. Given my statement might simply change when leveling up is described in more detail. Given they did use bethesda to highlight rpg side, so I could be very very wrong.

You know you made an amazing game when you steal the show from Naughty Dog.

Looks very good! I want to play it but I don't know if I can afford a second console =

If I do though I'll 100% need to snag a PS4 and this.

That's simply the line I've drawn that includes everything I intuitively consider an RPG and discludes everything I think isn't.  Had a lot of discussions with Naznatips about how you define what is and isn't an RPG and that one rule seems to work for just about everything.  If your character is getting better throughout the game because they gain new abilities or gain new equpment that goes against the core concept of RPG which is that you gain experience through battle and that experience is used to increase your characters' abilities.  If the equipment gained experience that would be one thing, but there is no such thing as experience in things like MH or Zelda and thus this seems like a good line to draw for an RPG definition.

But wouldn't you thus argue that drops themselves could be seen as experience that you need to make your character stronger? Given you are correct that I truly need to see what they mean by leveling up system. In which case I could be so wrong on my assumption.

Can't wait. Games gone be beast.

You could argue that grinding for equipment in MH is similar to grinding levels in any standard RPG, but just because something is very similar does not make a game an RPG.  Similar to how some think Zelda is an RPG simply because it has a lot of the trappings common to the genre.  To me genres are defined by key gameplay motifs and the key for RPGs is leveling base stats using experience.

And yeah, it really depends what the quoted person means by "leveling up Aloy" because obviously that isn't a statement with a clearcut definition as you and I just proved.
