Forums - Gaming - Is the Wii U the worst console of all time?(OP clarification)

No it is not a Sega-console

Around the Network

Of course not. There are a lot good games on Wii U like Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2 or Splatoon.

I gotta say I've really enjoyed my Wii U. The definite fault is the low quantity of games, but there's some really great ones.

I'm pretty sure we could assemble a fairly long list of consoles that seemed "worse", but others have already addressed it (layoff the intellivision guys, it was pretty cool :p)

As for your "I'm not looking to start a flame war"... When you title your thread "Is the Wii U the worst console of all time?" you're either rather ignorant of video game history or are, indeed, attempting to start a flame war.

No, its not. CD-i, Jaguar, 3DO, etc pop to mind.

Discounting all the niche consoles like the 3DO, CD-i, Bandai thingy, Pippin, Channel F and whatever else over the generations, it still isn't, though of the Big 5 (Nintendo, PlayStation, XBox, SEGA and Atari) I'd say it is giving everything a run for their money.

I have only played the 2600, which is pretty awesome and for it's time relatively way better than WiiU will ever be, but I'm sure the 5200, 7800 and Jaguar are worse than WiiU. SEGA Saturn maybe, haven't played that one either and don't really know what it has to offer.

All XBoxes, all PlayStations, the Dreamcast and the Mega Drive however are definitely better than WiiU. Some of them with ease.

Of Nintendo consoles themselves, I'd say it's also still firmly in last place. Previously, GameCube was easily my least favorite, with disappointing entries in the main IP's. Mario Sunshine, Double Dash, Wind Waker, all my least favorites in their series (for Mario and WW in the 3D series at least). While WiiU's Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 are better, GameCube just had more interesting new things and more things in general. Also, while 3D World is better as a game, Sunshine was still a bigger deal because it was a 'true 3D Mario' adventure. As of now all this, keeps GameCube above WiiU for me. That console is also realistically the only one WiiU can still hope to beat, because Zelda U would need to be the best game ever made (and remain exclusive otherwise if's impact diminishes) for it to even hope to beat Wii, SNES, NES and definitely N64.

I do agree with Soundwave though that if Zelda U is better than Wind Waker, that could still tip the scales in it's favor. And Zelda U being better than Wind Waker is, to me, pretty likely.

but ww came with masterquest, even if you dont like ww, how can you not like masterquest?

Of course, Master Quest is cool. Master Quest is Ocarina of Time though which is a win for the N64. Ports lose most if not all their impact to me on a newer console, because said game is old already and doesn't do anything to give it's system it's own image. It, and the Collector's Disc didn't really do much for my appreciation of the GameCube, like Wind Waker HD didn't for WiiU.

I do like Wind Waker though, just not as much as the other 3D games and beating the weakest shouldn't be too hard to achieve for Zelda U.

the n64 clearly didn't have metroid, but it did have what is known as the best game of all time (ocarina of time) and its sequel (majora's mask), and a 3d defining game (mario 64), and a prominent shooter (goldeneye), and 3rd party support among many other things.

Did the n64 go through tough times, sure, but overall they had games that were truly worth looking back at with joy. The wii u is still missing some critical hits before it reaches the same level

I think the N64 console was the console that disappointed me the most. Japanese third-party games were all the rage back then, and save for Konami throwing it the occasional bone, the Japanese third parties flat-out ignored the N64. And Nintendo's first-party droughts were brutal, and their constant delays were embarrassing. A lot of N64 games I did want died in development hell. Eventually I got so tired of waiting for N64 games that I went out and bought a PS1, which was crawling with RPGs and other stuff I love.

I guess I've accepted that Nintendo will always lag behind in third parties, though I did appreciate them getting Tales of Symphonia and Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube. Nowadays, neither the PS4 nor the Xbox One are exactly swimming with games I'm dying to play, so Wii U's software droughts are less garing to me than the N64's were.  Bayonetta 2 was my favorite game of last year, hands down.

Plus, while Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were great, I prefer Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. :)

By al means, don't feel obligated to call the n64 your favorite or a better experience for you than the wii u.

However, please know that compared to the wii u, the n64 simply offered a larger and wider collection of games for gamers of different genres. You were dissapointed in the japanese third prty offerings on the n64 similar to how people are annoyed at missing racers, traditional fighters, shooters, stealth games, and more on the wii u.

No.

Firstly, you seem to be positing that until now Gamecube was the worst games console of all time, as you keep comparing the Wii U to the Gamecube. This would be a very dumb premise to begin with. I think people have listed all the horrible consoles there have been over the years, e.g. the Jaguar, 3DO, CDi etc. Even something like the Saturn is surely worse than the Gamecube.

Now for the rest of this nonsense. The Gamepad works pretty nicely in some games. It's not as smart as a Wiimote, but it's way better than say, the Gamecube controller. It's far more versatile and I think Splatoon has done a nice job of showcasing a side to it perhaps we hadn't seen before.

Third party support is weak. That's fair.

First party support on the other hand blows Gamecube out of the water in my opinion. Sure, the new Zelda game has yet to come, but right now, they say it's coming. The Wii U doesn't have a Metroid game, but you can buy the Prime Trilogy on eshop for a convenient price. Splatoon is a great game of which the Gamecube has nothing to compare, Super Mario Maker will be another great game that the Gamecube will have nothing to compare (in fact 2D platformer support on Wii U is fantastic, which may not be important to you but is important to some). To say that Wii U doesn't have a "strong" 3D Mario game is objectively wrong. Super Mario 3D World is objectively a fantastic game, and if you disagree then you are factually wrong. Super Mario Sunshine on the other hand, which you quote, is actually quite flawed, if still good. Smash and Mario Kart (the best Mario Kart ever) are ready and present complete with continuing support. Backwards compatibility is obviously better than Gamecube - not just because it can play Wii games but Virtual Console and also just controller backwards compatibility. I haven't had to buy a single new controller for Wii U (save for the Gamepad which came with the console) and yet I can still play 8 player Smash if I want to.

This all leads back to where I began. No.

No it's not, it's a great console, but Nintendo should give up on the gamepad the way Microsoft did with kinect.

You state that like it is a fact. I don't understand how so many gamers have zero appreciation for Sega consoles. The Saturn had Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun, Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Nights into Dreams and so many other classic games that I would certainly put it in the same league as the GameCube.

@OP

You have got to be kidding me. You have got to be joking by excluding any console not manufactured by "the big four" (you mean five right?). If you are going to be so selective then why not have an appropriate thread title? As far as the worst console between those companies I'd say that you're splitting hairs when comparing systems like the GameCube, Wii U, Master System,  Saturn and potentially the One.

No, I'm very happy with it. It has an amazing first party library of games. I'm dissapointed because I was expecting franchises like Metroid and Animal Crossing to do an appearance in this E3, but, nope. But it was the console which bring me back to gaming, and that's something. I'm just angry at Nintendo because they seem to stop supporting the WiiU the next year, but, let's wait.
