My problem with kickstarter is that it's like pre-ordering a game literally years before release, without the option to cancel. In the case of most games, you can justify it because they're small time and they actually NEED the kickstarter money to fund development. Shenmue III clearly already has some backing from a mega corporation, so it feels kinda like a ripoff to be running a kickstarter for it.

I mean, announcing a Kickstarter during an E3 conference of all things. I never thought I'd see the day.

They have a refund security if the game doesn't happen, right?

Cancelling after donating would be cruel to be honest, as one time the guy can have the money to do it and all of a sudden he can just lose it.

It's worth than that. If you're halfway trough development and have to refund people, but have already spent part of the money, it's full bankruptcy and if it's an indie developper (in belgian's law at least) the debt will be in the developper's name.

With that said most of the time kickstarter is only part of the money and a motivation for banks and developpers to invest in a game they wouldn't otherwise funded, so the devs wouldn't be that screwed.

With the exception that a kickstarter is an idea as opposed to pre-ordering a game that is actually in development and likely close to released. Although, the whole pre-order idea is totally flawed as well. Games being sold on hype whent they aren't even finished is just bunk.

There is no guarantee that a kickstarter will come out, or when. But at the same time, like you said, it's like a pre-order. There is still no guarantee for that either.

I don't think it's a win-win though. Sure it carries the name shenmue, but what if the game sucks ass? What if it's already made for the dreamcast but wasn't released and will just get ported? What if it's a glitch fest? There are a whole shit ton of what if's here and nothing to protect the consumer in any way if it is garbage. They could release a 2D side scrolling 30 frame game with two lines of text and call it Shenmue 3 and it's still technically released.

Yeah, I'm cynical with this stuff, I'm not going to deny it. It just seems like a way to screw the consumer.

If you think the developer will deliver you a broken game or a half assed game is only your fault for still dropping the money on it.

It's just a long pre-order, and it's a good option to that kind of situation IMO.

It's beyond me why people would even consider kickstarting something if they think they can get fucked by doing it.

Also, they do have to deliver what they promisse don't them? Kickstarter sure must have it's rules to protect consumers.

Not nearly as much as many think. Read the fine print.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

I question whether a few million is enough to make the game that fans want. Shenmue 1 took $47million ($67mil with inflation), so why would this game be so drastically cheaper. From what has been shown, it looks to be far from the graphical showcase the original two were and it seems like virtually no work has been done on it.

I have my doubts

According to Shinobi (one of the few reliable insiders there are) Sony will provide additional funding if the game hits its 2 million goal.

And also the original games were the most expensive games off all time when they were made, they had to invent new techniques, it changed platforms once from Saturn to Dreamcast, and it was leaps and bounds ahead of anything else in its time.

There's no need for this one to cost anywhere close to as much, and considering this Kickstarter will get 8-10 million (okay, 5 is the minimum) plus Sony funding, it's easily doable.

As much as I want shenmue 3 I can't bring myself to delve into crowdfunding on principle.

People want it so much, the money is just flying to the screens....

$2 million is the stated goal, looks like it will pass that with ease in less than a day.

Wow 1.3m in less than 24h.

is this really ps4/pc only or did they just give it to sony to show off first? I won't buy it if there's no physical copy on a home console.

So far it's PS4/PC only, but I imagine stretch goals might make way for ports. Personally I only chipped in $5; I'd up that dramatically if a physical PS4 release was a backer reward option. I only hope Sony will make a mid-E3 announcement upon Shenmue getting funded that they'll publish it.
