Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo and Smash's Latest DLC: Is Sakurai and Nintendo Going Too Far?

Is the DLC too expensive?

Yes 217 66.56%

No 109 33.44%

Total:326

I don't own smash yet, so it doesn't really affect me. Buuuuut....

Comparing prices to other fighting game DLC (looking at you mortal combat) it's completely in line with what the industry usually charges, or even a little cheaper.
However one might argue that 3-5 Dollars isn't really that great of a value per fighter anyways.

This is where Mario Kart 8s great DLC comes in. It has such great value for the price, naturally one can't help but compare that to smash DLC. It makes smashes pricing scheme seem bad by comparision. And while I like the flexibility of choosing every fighter/stage/costume on it's own I would like a pack with all of the dlc released so far, priced at about 15 dollars. I feel like that would be about on par with mario Kart dlc contentwise as well as pricewise.

This is going too far!

Many fighting games have $5 dlc characters, but most fighting games also drop down to $20 in price. Given smash bros history, the game will probably not fall below $40 for a long while.

Many people don't realise that having the complete roster is important for many. Ryu already seems to be overpowered, so you can't really ignore this purchase if you are trying to be competitive in the game. If it was just mewtwo, I would be fine with making a one-time overpriced buy, but it is 4 characters and more stages

This is really a pathetic cash grab by Nintendo, and unless the price changes, I hope this is the end of smash bros dlc.

Indeed, they are going too far. I'm not buying any of the Smash DLCs. Fuck Sakurai, fuck Nintendo and fuck Smash Bros.

I miss the days when you unlocked characters by playing the damn game, not by paying for each one. You want to make more characters once the game is finished? Awesome, give them for free or make them being obtainable by beating something from the game.

Sakurai has much to learn from people like Katsushiro Harada.

Why would they make more characters and expend resources if they're gonna hand them out for free?

As for Harada, he made Tekken Revolution. That fucked up all the goodwill from TTT2.

the way it was done in MK8 is very good but they are taking it too far with Smash as those are expensive!

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Perhaps people have been spoiled by the way MK8's DLC was handled... Which was amazing btw. $12 for all that content. Smash pricing doesn't look half as bad as other DLC prices I've seen out there.

Honestly, I personally can't wait until Splatoon exhausts it's "free" DLC (AKA content that's currently locked on a disc at the moment) and starts charging for new content. Maybe we'll get the honor of paying CoD DLC rates.

They can make as much DLCs as they want, as long as it is reasonable.
But the price is just way too high. I would consider it, if it was half the price, but I don't even think about buying it for this price.
It is really surprising too, because they have done such a good job with the Hyrule Warriors and MK8 DLCs.

With Pikmin 3 and  NSLU they also did quite a good job, but this is just way to expensive compared to many games. Sure netherrealm isn't cheap either but €4- for a veteran and arguably as much of a clone as dark Pit and dr Mario are is almost funny. Seems like Nintedo is just another company, which just like Sony and MS makes good and bad DLC. I would also like to see free support from Nintendo, something like Sony did with DC and MS kind a did with Titanfall.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

i really want ryu, but the ocd in me needs roy and lucas also. these prices are terribad, i ignored injustice and mkx dlc as well, and still waiting for a reasnable killer instinct deal. the only fighter game dlc ive supported was sf iv which i kinda regret. Ninty has to make a reasonable bundle like they did with kart8...

Yes, way too far.
But the main problem is not the price but what the content they are selling that should have come with the game.
It's clear now that the game must has been delayed until this spring.

This thread reveals to me how much people don't understand the business, and how entitled people have become. While I do understand as a consumer that the prices seem steep, especially considering the original game costs vs the price of the DLC content. However, a lot of you guys really don't understand how or why it's priced the way it is. Saying it's a "cash grab" just shows how little you understand, because OF COURSE it is. That's the point of paid DLC. Any DLC that you pay for is meant to be for profit. Do you really think Nintendo is doing this to service the fans? Smash Bros is a big series, of course they will want to profit off of it after release.

Nintendo isn't screwing the customers over either, since the game as it was when released was a full game, not game that had things taken out so they can be put back in and be charged for. You can make the argument that it should be cheaper, because as a customer you feel like the value of the content is lower. Problem is that the costs that went into making that content available plus the expected amount of people who get it also goes into how they think it should be priced. They give it a price that they expect to yield the most profit.

Most other companies are going to be the exact same way. Saying Nintendo is going too far for doing what companies do is holding them to a standard that doesn't make sense. It makes more sense if you guys were actually a majority when it comes to purchasing DLC. Many of you probably don't buy DLC much to begin with.

The same thing can be said for many PSOne Classics on the PS Store like Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy 7.

The good Nintendo DLC people are talking about are things like Mario Kart 8, for $12 u get 6 characters, 8 vehicles & 16 tracks. Hyrule Warriors is another good example, for a total of $20 u get 4 characters, 5 new story levels, 3 new adventure maps, 2 new game modes, a bunch of new costumes. New super Mario Bros U is a third example, for $20 u get 80+ remixed levels with harder challenges and shorter completion time.

Compared to those games, Smash Bros DLC doesn't seem as good, perhaps once all the DLC has released they will offer it up in one big bundle for $20 which wouldn't be a bad deal at that point.

Yeah, but even PSOne classics go down in price, get put on PS +, get put into sales, etc. I bought MK64 on Wii for $10 7 years ago, and it's still $10 on Wii-U. Plus, the games you mentioned are third party and fall onto those developers to decide the price. MK64, M64, etc., all belong to Nintendo, and all their VC titles are way overpriced.

And Nintendo occasionally does sales with its VC games, not to mention offering many of them for free through Club Nintendo. I got Mario 64 for free through Club Nintendo yesterday. By the way, a full classic game =/= DLC, so your argument isn't valid anyway.
