How much did DVD players costs a year and a half after they were launched? Oh yeah, higher than this, even not accounting for inflation.

HD-DVD gave people unrealistic price expectations for the new format (because Toshiba was selling the players at a LOSS). It is an unhealthy business model that discourages any manufacturer from making a Blu-Ray player when the prices are rock bottom. Seriously, prices will drop, like every other product ever made. Expect $250-$300 players by Christmas.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. I've been saying this for almost a year now. The two were needed to beat each other's brains in to get prices down. The last 6 months of price drops were staggering -- even seeing an HD-DVD player hit 98 bucks at one point. If you read the article, the sony unit is UP $100 just this year which is crazy.

Warner stated they made the move to drop HD-DVD support because they wanted a one-horse race and that it would speed the shift to next-gen. This is more egg than will fit on one face as far as that reasoning is concerned. Average prices are back to about $400 for a player according to this graph. Joe Six Pack isn't paying $400 for a DVD player -- simple as that.

Those fanboys that were screaming for HD-DVD to give up because teh blu-rayz roolz now have what they want -- to the full and unmitigated detriment to the consumer.

I'd be happy to get a blue ray player as it is now the de-facto next-gen. I'm not, however, going to pay $400 for it. Plain and simple.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

There is a Sony bluray player on that site as well and it is 70 bucks more expensive than its cheapest point...

In any case, anyone thinking that competition is not a good thing and that 1 format is the way to go is insane. PS3 without 360 would still be 499 and you'd get 1 game to play every 6 months. But sony has to work hard to compete. Bluray has no such competition... you will see less R&D on the product, prices will be higher...Sony will not lower PS3 price for a while because it may piss off hitachi who are licensing the technology at a higher price...

You know...the corporate BS!

"Ironically, although Blu-ray has been declared the winner, it is right now about the worst time to invest in a standalone Blu-ray player, because of the high prices and looming obsolescence"

Everyone remember single speed CD-ROMs and single speed DVD players?  They were expensive and a lot of them weren't made well.  There is no way I'd even consider getting anything Bluray until the price goes down and the speed goes up.

I like the PS3, but it is hard to believe that they won't update bluray drives in future years models.

Looks like Blu-Ray will crash and burn before it even gets off the ground at this rate. Not that that's surprising to anyone with half a brain.

The tears are bitter, aren't they?

and yet, the best selling blu-ray player on the market, one the with more than 10 million unit sold, did not raise the price at all.

yes, Blu-Ray has no competition anymore, neither did CD-Rom or DVD Rom,

You guys are joking right >_>? At least we have MULTIPLE company's producing blu-ray products, at least it's the BDA and not Toshiba only >_>. Player prices of course are going to take a small bump now that their's only one format, hello, they are in this as a business. If your really that concerned, don't buy the product -_-; if you don't buy it, they don't sell. It's a simple issue of supply and demand. And because so many company's create these products, someone will have to make a move on the competitive front.

Do you honestly think Toshiba lost hundreds of dollars per unit to make you guys happy? Hell no! They did that because that's the only card they had to play against the BDA. And I'd much rather take a bump in cost to have one format as compared to purchasing two units -_-

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

As far as I know, the only current BR player that can adapt to the 2.0 standard is the ... PS3.

That could be why people are buying the PS3. And comparing hardware and software sales in Others last week appears to support this contention. Also, the PS2 sold well in Japan early on because -- in part -- it was the least expensive DVD player available.

Excuse me? did you say toshiba was the only company behind HDDVD? Do some research... there were dozen players from different companies that were licensing the technology. Same as bluray... As far as who designed what..it was Sony and Pioneer for bluray and Toshiba and NEC for HDDVD. Thats it...

Interesting that if Toshiba loses money on selling a unit it is considered not a healthy business.
I was under the impression that Sony was doing the same with the PS3.
Oh well.
On topic: This was obviously going to happen. If HD-DVD had won would you think that the prices would not go up??
There has to be one format otherwise why would anyone want to upgrade.
