Forums - Microsoft - Pre-NPD: Microsoft Expects To Trail In February

I couldn't find much information about middle or South America other than due to pricing of the current gen consoles the PS2 does best. PSOne and even Sega Genesis were still sold at shops in 2007, 80% of South American youths below the age of 25 play video games and the bulk of them are pirating the games.

One interesting quote with regard to Mexico:

"In 2004, Sony brought the PlayStation 2 to Mexico, officially. According to Jeffrey Wright at America's News Intelligence (http://www.latinintel.com/), they opened a distribution facility to put the console in retail stores at an affordable price and Sony has sold over 860,000 units in Mexico as of Q4 2007."

I also read Sony Argentina once stated over 500K PS2s were sold there (no timeline given though).

This article is an interesting read.

Wheres starcraft to spin this?

How will gebx spin this? Last time I checked, the guy's facing 8 weeks ban on March NPD number.

NPD numbers only apply to MikeB, everyone else is according to VGC.

Hey King, how about you join in the bet with MikeB based on March NPD numbers?

Common! You chickened out the first time. Will you chicken out again?

He is in my thread. He is saying it's cause everyones waiting for a WW price drop now.

Too bad the price drop is EU only.

Try to understand the concept, perception is everything.  In any case, I didn't say that price drop anticipation had anything to do with February sales.  Pooper was lying when he said that too you (he does that, you know?).

What I said was that Microsoft said they would sort their supply issues out sometime in March, so why is anyone surprised they affected FEBRUARY'S NPD????

Possibly because almost every store I go to here on Long Island, New York whether it be Gamestop, Walmart, Target, Circuit City, Sears, etc... have had XBox360's (Arcade, Elite and Pro Models) in stock since early February.

I am also curious how a console that has been out for over 2 years all of a sudden has supply constraints now, yet is selling less than the PS3. I just don't see it. Your telling me that after a Christmas in which is sold less than the PS3, it has no stock left?

They keep on claiming shortages, yet have no proof to back it up seeing as how stores have them in stock.

Only thing I know for sure is that my brother works at Sear's and said for a while in early February the Pro and Elite consoles would sell a few short hours after they came in, only because they recieved between 4-6 of each per week. Although now he says they have no problem keeping them in stock.

I love my 360, but I call BS on Microsoft.

360 sales have been low due to lack of Elites / Premiums and will likely remain a little low as many are waiting for a price drop which is just around the corner.

That sounds like a shortage to me!

The PS3 outsold the 360 in the US during Christmas? I could've swore the numbers showed things were the other way around. That was the whole reason MS had shortages. They said they underestimated Holiday/Post-Holiday sales. So being that Sony stuffed the channel with PS3's they had plenty to go around.

The PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide for christmas, for just the US/North America the 360 outsold the PS3.

PS3 vs 360 sales

@Mike B:

I've just looked back over the figures and to say that our Jan figures were miles off it totally unfair. Wii, Xbox360, PSP all showed around a 5% difference between NPD data and our raw US data - so spot on in other words (anything less than 10% is rediculously good). PS2 was about 14% lower, PS3 30% lower and DS 75% higher. PS2 is again pretty good so only PS3 and DS were really of any concern to me last month.

DS was sold out at some retailers and in good supply at others - I can understand there being some large differences although as I explained last month I feel NPD were far too low and we were too high so you'll see I adjusted our figures somewhere in the middle, also after talking to Nintendo about their shipments.

For PS3, some of our sources only give monthly data, which we don't get until about a week after the end of the month. There had been a huge increase in PS3 sales last month at electronics retailers which we hadn't really seen in our weekly information. This has been taken into account this month and hopefully our data will be much closer.

I do wish people will give a bit more credit than they do sometimes for consistently putting out free data every week which is often within a reasonable margin of error of the data put out by professional tracking services for many thousands of dollars. To be getting so close on such a small scale is something I am very proud of and I wish people weren't so quick to jump in the minute your favourite console doesn't sell as well as you hope.

Do not fret, there are many here who appreciate all the work you and this site puts in to insure we get the most accurate sales data for the consoles we all love to whine about and/or praise. Big deal if sometimes things are a wee bit off, nobody is perfect. All that matters is that you guys are so unbelievably close and sometimes you are spot on and that is why I choose this site over any other for my gaming sales data as well as gaming news.

Never get discouraged. We all love you here. :)

Maybe you took my post wrong. I always look at things on a Worldwide scale as opposed to just the US.

I understand people saying the under estimated sales for the Holidays and that would explain their shortages.

How many more XBox360 consoles were sold this past Holiday season as opposed to the previous year in America? I would like to think they expected it to sell more, not the same amount if not less.

My head is not filled with these numbers so I will sometimes be way off and possibly look foolish and to be honest, if I am indeed wrong, I would appreciate if someone would inform me. :) I'm not one to start argument so I just ask that people never take my posts that way. I indeed love all my consoles.

Edit - Haha, seems as though I misquoted. I was aiming this towards Goddbless or anyone who wishes to read my sometimes large posts.
