Forums - Gaming - CEO Of R* Says PS4/XB1 Power Nowhere Near Realized Yet

After so many generations of consoles, I still can't believe we're debating this. Weird.

The PS5 Exists.

People are more or less brushing off the graphics of of the next gen exclusives because multiconsole ports are near identical to last gen. So far there's been next to nothing that hasn't been a port. The games that are actually exclusive have been far better looking than anything on the prior gen. Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, DriveClub, Infamous Second Son, Bloodborne, and The Order 1866.

We were talking about early to late PS3 games due to the architecture being bat shit crazy to develop for. And even with that in mind, the games we can actually look at (same dev, same setting and tone games) look pretty much identical. Based off that what is the likelyhood of games looking insanely better from the start of this gen to the end (based on a 5 year cycle)? We are already nearing year 2 for PS4 and Xbone and know what these games look like for this year. We can pretty much call second year a wrap.

That said, are graphics going to get better? Sure. By any great amount? No.

The fact that games look so much better (exclusives wise) is because the old consoles simply could not get that much farther ahead in graphics even after new engines, ect came. Therefore, its probably safe to assume PS4 and XBone exclusive games now and near the end of its life cycle will look (different sure, but) practically the same.

Learn from the past or repeat it.

I would like to direct you to Guitarguys post on Uncharted 1 and 3. I'd also like to point you to Call of Duty 3 for 360 and PS3 vs. Advanced Warfare for the same consoles.

I'd also like to reiterate the point that the devs are saying that we'll see significant improvement and they actually know what they're talking about.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Kids these days...

cutscene shot vs. cutscene shot...

Even ignoring those though, in the gameplay videos you posted TLOU looks so crazily better...

Edit: I'd like to point something else out here aswell, how many devs now have come out and said that we'll see big graphical improvements over the course of the gen?  Yet every time another one does the response is always "Nope, won't happen" like the people saying it have any clue.

When did I say that. They will get better, but not be any drastic means. Just like every gen. Can we be friends now?

*Edit*, my bad, you wanted me to talk about the PS3 versions. Yeah, true the leap is surely better than Uncharted Vs TLOU, but they are also a multiplats (one from PS2 era and from Xbone). That's like saying let's look at Ghosts and Advance Warfare for Xbone. SEE HOW AMAZING IT LOOKS! Bad point is bad point. Hardly any optimization.

I'd also like to point out that these same devs that "know what they are talking about" gave us watchdogs, AC Unity, Destiny, Titanfall and have all come up short on promises.... Just saying.

Thanks :)

I actually wanted to quote my post and bigtakilla's but wasn't sure how to do it in the one post. The difference between Uncharter 1 and 3 is staggering. Sure it is not a generational leap(ie PS2 to PS3, OG Xbox to 360) but it is significant. Will the PS4 and X1 see leaps of this caliber? It is possible surely considering every other console has seen graphical improvements over time. Perfect Dark looked much better than Goldeneye(same developer/console/engine albeit modified), Gran Turismo 4 looked much better than GT3(again same developer/console/engine). GTA5 smokes GTA4 on every level also. I don't see this trend stopping just because these consoles use standardised components.

Opinions, we all got em. If you consider that a great leap I think your selling yourself short though.

The PS3 had a big jump in quality because it took devs a good 5 years before they learned how the fuck that thing actually worked.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

That statement wasn't just directed at you, though you did say that we won't see big graphical improvements in this thread.

You keep saying that they won't get better, the point I'm trying to make is that the people who actually make the games are saying that we will see big changes. Why would somebody who has no involvement in making the games (not just you of course) think they know better?

Bolded: I...what? I never meant any ill will, just pointing out that it's a weird phenominon I often see in threads like this.
